P0733 CODE IN 05 FORD EXPLORER Sign In

I have a 2005 Ford Explorer with a 5R55 tranny. A few months ago I was driving about 25 mph when the RPMs reved to 4000, the check transmission light came on & the o/d light started flashing. I continued driving but with difficulty. When I got to about 45 mph the car would buck violently. I took it took a tranny shop, they found P0733 code & told me I need a new transmission. Since then the car drives pretty well, no more bucking, sometimes get the reving issue. If this doesn't happen every time I drive, do I really need a new transmission?

Re: P0733 CODE IN 05 FORD EXPLORER Sign In

P0733 means an incorrect third gear ratio. Most likely your trans is on the way out and you need a new one. The code sets when you are in third gear, the VSS is sending a signal and the reading the PCM gets does not match the known ratio for that gear. The PCM gets a reading from the engine RPM and the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) and compares it to what the third gear ratio is. If it doesn't match the code sets. When it was revving higher than it should in third gear was when the code set. You may be driving it now, but trust me its going to blow soon. This isn't likely to be a sensor malfunction as you can feel the slippage still and it only logs the code for third gear. If it were a VSS issue there would be other codes, and to set this code it needs to have a signal from the VSS.

Right now the pieces coming off of third gear have made their way into other parts and are accellerating wear on them. Don't bother getting the fluid flushed, its not going to help at all and might actually be the finisher that kills this off. So you're on borrowed time here when you drive it. I'd start saving for a new trans or saving for a new truck.

Thanks nickwarner! I kinda thought I was on borrowed time just hoping not. I appreciate your response & the mini lesson on transmissions.
