Hello everyone,

My name is Jake and I'm in London, UK.

My question is regarding a Peugeot Expert van (right hand drive, 5 speed manual gearbox, 1.6L, 2008 model).

I have just bought my Expert and have noticed that the gearbox is quite stiff and feels like stirring thick honey when changing from gear to gear.

The clutch works perfectly so have ruled out a clutch issue. It goes into gear, and stays in gear when driving it's just the heaviness of it when changing that doesn't seem normal.

If anyone has any ideas as to what this could be I would very much appreciate your answers.

Have a great day!
Jake

Hi Jake! This brand TMK hasn't been sold to the US at all for some time TKM and haven't seen one of any style in ages. No matter lets' see what we can do or rule in or out.

Most would be hydraulic clutch linkage and shifting can be sticky if not fully released. Quick test would be it shifts fine if engine is OFF the strong clue or a "zip" if slowly putting it in revers while just at idle.
Certainly check fluid level, gear oil level and see what type of linkage shifts this. Lube any mechanical rods or cables you may see.

Next could be gear oil just needs changing and suggest doing so with this complaint anyway. I'd seek out a synthetic gear oil that meets the vehicle's specifications. IDK - possibly it has wrong gear oil in it now. I have helped another with just changing oil with this complaint but doubt cured as gear oil was sludged which it isn't really known for? Another whole type of vehicle.

One last would behave like this and also shift fine with engine off is a warped clutch disc from usually improper installation. Drive wheels if hoisted would spin away and still move with shifting as clutch itself is still dragging if so.
YOU will need to know what type of gear oil exactly belongs in this. Few but some will use automatic types of oils not gear type oils but if replaced would have to feel what you describe.

In short probably clutch not really disengaging fully for the reasons mentioned IMO. Good luck,
T

Hi, thank you for your reply.

The gears do exactly the same thing when the engine is off, it's no different.

I've been reading multiple articles online, most for other car and van makes and the reoccurring problems are - linkage issues, gearbox oil, the cable being to tight?

Thanks again for your reply.

Check all anyway. If you found this a recurring issue what are folks NOT doing? If this was gear oil alone (not sure) I would think it would improve when warmed up.
Many gearcases use a mid line bolt some square some who knows and a drain bolt on some, not all. The ones mid way up and verify this is the level and if only to bend a Q-Tip and get a sample would be info for you.

Look at what moves where. Brand WD-40 and others for longer here sell spray greases useful for a ton of things and should have some. All this stuff gets neglected some styles tolerate it some don't right down to door and "bonnet + boot" latches and so on.

Reason for either Lithium greases for metal and cable things or better synthetic is they last tons longer and don't wash out quickly.
For shifting if you find one thing in common that could be ball socket type thing at transmission I'd first lube with light oil something then grease over that if that solved it. Cables I pull or operate mechanisms to expose as much as possible of the cable inside and lube it with fingers, spray or as seen fit for each thing.
If this is it here's a trick as I do this to any device the moves a lot. If by a tube spray nozzle that comes with a product take a lighter and warm them up on some that you need to spray up at something - it works for that.

Again - watch things move and where what is a possible spot for troubles. Just did this yesterday on one of my own on every dang thing the moves and do a couple times a year problem or not but don't have the problems!
