I just replaced the transmission fluid filter on my Astro, as well as the seal, and was able to push it in all the way by hand. I am sure that it is in all the way and the seal is as well. There are no screws or clips to hold it in, it is purely pressure fit in place. It is firm but I tested it and it was not hard to pull it back out. It took some effort to remove but not much. Is it normal for these filters to not be in super tight? I'm worried it might come loose and prevent me from being able to shift...
Just bought the van and am doing a full tune up and changing all fluids. Which it desperately needed. I just want to make sure I don't make any mistakes and damage the drivetrain. Any help is appreciated.

The clearance between the filter and the surface of the pan is so small the filter doesn't have room to come out. It won't go anywhere.

Ah I see. That makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. I had originally purchased a filter that was just a bit larger and the pan wouldn't even fit on. That said if the filter were to shake loose and bottom out on the pan would it be possible for the pump to start sucking some air? I've heard that could damage the pump if it happens for too long.

There is no air to be sucked. The entire filter is submerged in fluid.

If this is a first IMO only perhaps that cleaning out the pan is where that yuk paste of worn bands collects.
Again and on IMO is that if a filter is in fact clogged that trans is junk or will be.
Changing fluid + filter is again IMO either good or bad for squeezing out more life. I'm brand loyal to WIX or have been not sure their quality has kept up?

Im sorry but I dont quite understand what you are trying to say here. I changed my transmission fluid because it was looking pretty dark and I figured I might as well change the filter while I was in there. To be clear the filter was not clogged I only changed it as it was very old and dirty. I used AC Delco parts for the job.

I'm sorry too if not clear so I'll blame dang computers for screw up near everything.
This site has a pro in transmissions, it's an hydraulic machine of itself.
Wearing parts are lightly coated with once asbestos also glued to the clutches, bands that act as brakes like drum brakes on vehicles with brake action outside clamping a drum.
I don't do this stuff but was incredibly part of training how things work. I work alone and have since the mid to late 70s! OK? This site is free by volunteers at out expense to help hopefully with correct info.
In short you found this dirty is not a great thing. It's like brake dust in fluid that collects like mud in the pan some with a OE magnet to trap metal worn parts buys time and miles.
It's a wearing machine of itself no chance of infinite life to it , it wears like brakes do just in fluid.
YOU made the attempt to buy more life to it and it can. That or that muck you saw it was getting used to now new fluid if even just pan drop and filter will move other debris make it look dark which is HEAT the #1 killer of hydraulic machines which this is.
Synthetics seem to help extend life of the the things. It's a machine, such is the way it goes it now OLD with enough miles this and the rest of it can only take so much. It's worn now so expect a rebuild if this is still a great vehicle otherwise is again IMO worth it.
Laugh if you will I didn't take these on as too heavy and not room enough with assorted shops of my own have to have a "clean" area for this stuff NOT in my vocabulary - please just smile,
