RESOLVED

Hello All - First Post!!!

This year van has 3 tranny options for the 5.0L engine.

I need to know if {AOD}, {C6 (F2UP-CA)}, and/or {C6 without (F2UP-CA)} are of the same length, mounting, bell housing, etc. (operationally and installationally the same)...

I've found used 2 C6 w/out F2UP and 1 used with for cheap nearby in NJ
but the used AOD's are all in TX & OK and need freight shipping and costs way more...

I just need it to drive (minimum of 3 gears / 1:1 ratio) go get back and forth to work.

Year: 1993;
Make: Ford;
Model: E150 Econoline;
Type: Unfinished chassis for conversion van;
Engine: 5.0L;
VIN: 1FDEE14N0PHB76301;

Door placard: Trans Code: "T";
Gear selector: "PRN(D)D1";
Column shifter lever has overdrive button;

Door placard code and gear selector options point to an AOD but I have been told the column shifter overdrive button is for the C6 Crazy ???

For what it's worth, when I bought the van and it operated properly with OD the button made no difference and nothing lights up no matter if the button is pushed once twice or held in...

Thanks!

Code T is the AOD. The AOD was all mechanical and used a throttle valve cable to modulate line pressure. If the cable or linkage isn't adjusted properly you could either burn up the transmission or cause harsh delayed shifting.

The E40D has the overdrive button on the column, is computer controlled, and has an electrical connector plugged into it.

You really need to stick with the transmission that was originally behind that engine. When you start swapping flex plates and transmissions around on an externally balanced engine, you'll run into vibration issues.

Thanks for the reply!

Indeed, All signs were pointing to having an AOD already installed, thanks for verification.

The curiosity was that the gear selector lever does have an overdrive button at the tip of it (that appears inoperative).

The electronic transmissions were 94 and up for the 5.0L engine.

The E4OD was only offered on the 4.9 & 5.8L blocks therefore (in 93) that tranny is a bell housing &/or vehicle year / electronics mismatch.

This one came with either a C6 or an AOD - both types need no computer.

Does this mean the C6 and AOD share the same trans mount location, starter, and torque converter bolt-up?

Can a C6 be installed in this 93 AOD E150 without modification?
if not, Did different models come with different flywheels, different 5.0L harmonic balancers, starters, and cross members?
(if they do not that seems to defeat the purpose behind mass production with needing two different types of 5.0L for 1 van in 1 production year
)
If AOD & C6 can be swapped without mods, what is the difference between the C6 with F2UP-CA tag and without it?

Thanks!

Does the VIN on the federal certification sticker on the driver's door jam match the VIN on the tag on the dash behind the windshield? Are there any large multi pin electrical connectors down where the transmission would be. If this is an AOD there should be a throttle valve cable and linkage. The cable connects to the throttle body cam.

The C-6 would have a vacuum line that run from the intake down to a modulator valve on the transmission. The C-6, I believe, would also have a kick down cable or lever.

I'm not sure what you would have to do to make a conversion from an AOD to a C-6. I do know that you can run into engine balance issues when you start swapping transmissions around.

Thanks, I'll take a look at those things!

It would make sense to have issues if switching from a different year or between different motors but I can't see that even ford would break into the silliness of making 3 variations of the 5.0 specifically for a 1993 each with their own specific tranny.

It would stand to reason the bell housing would be the same on one 1993 E150 5.0L to another 1993 E150 5.0L but would the tranny crossmember/mount be the same too?

Drive shaft teeth/length hook up as well?

Would FORD really go through the trouble of making different crossmembers for the same engine with 3 tranny choices of the year for the same block along with two other motors 4.9 & 5.8 with different bell housings that use the C6 (like 5.0) and yet another different E4OD tranny (not offered for 5.0)?

Or do these combos all match up lengthwise to slip into the same motor mount and crossmembers of the singular body style of E150 van?
Has anyone ever swapped out a C6 and an AOD in a pickup?
What was needed?

The junk yard said the AOD matching my van was from a '93 F150 with 5.0L -

Thanks!

OK, found some great info link deleted ... not allowed regarding the AOD & its tail shaft lengths differing slightly between car, large car, & pick-up/van.

The page seems dedicated to swap info between the C4 and the AOD and those differences are minimal.

It also says
"AOD is bolted to the engine by the use of an integral bellhousing. Because all 289, 302, 351W and 351C blocks used the same bellhousing bolt pattern, the AOD will bolt directly to earlier Fords using these engine sizes"
and that the balance issues spoken of are due to a balance change between pre & post 1981 and that there are aftermarket matching plates to fix that problem.

BUT it wasn't about the C6, close but so still hunting...

Here are images of my setup and

YES, VIN matches with the dash (image of placard included)

linkage

Thanks for any help!

This site is mainly a repair information and suggestion site for assisting people in repairing and maintaining their vehicles. We usually don't deal with swapping assemblies from one design to another. Most professional repair techs in the industry don't attempt doing what your doing and those things are specialized or done at home for fun. I not saying that something like that can't be done, but we probably don't have the information your looking for. You might have better luck finding a site that specifically deals with that sort of thing.

OK, thanks for the heads up.

I actually did find a diff site that did have all that info a lil' while after I posted this morning...

It would require:
1)hook up a vacuum line from the intake to the tranny
2)remove TV cable + install downshift cable from donor tranny
3)yolk section of drive shaft
4)cut&splice neutral safety switch/reverse light wires (same colors)

All easy but the yolk $ + linkage $ + kickdown cable $ + transmission = price of AOD...

Thanks for twisting your brain on this one on my behalf.

For future reference the AOD is 1/2" longer and will fit in the same mount & X-member (at least until '94) & the yolk is needed because the output shaft is splined like a C4 (smaller than the C6) but the drive shaft is the same.
The flywheel/flexplate will bolt in but on the AOD the bolt holes are slightly indented meaning the C6 torque converter would still work but go into the transmissions front seal deeper which would only be an issue if the reverse swap from C6 to AOD because the trans front seal may leak/weep by riding in a different groove.

Almost as easy as a chevy save for the flywheel actually being different even on the same engine...

I will start a new thread with a new angle

- Thanks!

Sounds like you won on this and good for you. Truth is I'd take one look at that door jam sticker and freak at all the things that "might" be unique to this "incomplete" vehicle as was when sold new that doesn't even meet the eye.

Best to lock up thread as finished to keep spammer out. YOU can ask any moderator to re-open it upon request,
