I have the same problem with my 2004 Chevy Express 3500 Van. When it's cold, it shifts early and hard. After it warms up, it will randomly down shifts (sometimes it doesn't shift back up), it also drops in and out of OD while cruising at Highway speeds (on flat level ground). When it first started doing this, I took it in and had them replace the Trans, but the problem continued. I took it back in and they replace the "wire harness," but the problem still exists. Have any ideas on what to look for next?

Do you have any codes present? You may have a different transmission than the one in this thread, I would like to ID your trans, do you know which one you have, 4L60E or 4L80E? if not please post your vin number. Gary

Experience has me ask-
Are you SURE it is an issue with D to OD (3rd to 4th) and not a TCC issue?

I do have a code, but it's for the oil pressure sensor switch, which I will be replacing today or tomorrow. The vehicle VIN# 1GAHG39U641105432. The transmission was rebuild; Master OH Kit, Reverse Band, EPC Solenoid, TCC Solenoid, Update Shift Kit
Torque Converter, Input/Output peed sensor, Valve Kit, Manifold PR Switch, and Trans Fluids replaced on first time in shop. Wiring harness replaced on second time in shop.

Hello,
Ok, this is a 4L80E Transmission. What it sounds like to me is, in the valvebody there is a valve called the Actuator Feed Limit Valve(or AFL Valve) This valve is reponsible for feeding oil to the solenoids, If the bore gets worn(and they all do) It will fall out of speed when hot and in the higher gears. The problem may be not enough oil is getting to the solenoids. I had a similar truck doing the same thing and that was the problem. To get techincal, i vacuum test the bore with a machine to see how worn the bore gets. How many miles on the truck? I saw there was an updated shift kit, can you ask if that bore was addressed, find out whose shift kit it was. Gary

Here is a quick update. I haven't checked the AFL Valve yet. I did replace the Oil Pressure sensor switch. Since replacing the switch, the van has shifted almost flawlessly. Once and a while, the transmission still will shift in and out of OD, but only for a short period of time.

Not sure what sensor your speaking of, can you tell me where its located? By chance is it the one that bolts to the valvebody? Gary

Oil Pressure Sensor Switch is located towards the back on top of the engine near the fire wall. Here's a diagram of the location (give or take).

Would any of the wiring bundles near the switch have anything to do with the transmissions? When I replaced the switch, I had to move the wiring bundles to the side quite a bit to get the socket onto the switch to replace it.

That harness may go down to the trans, moving it and if its loose it may store codes. Any codes? Gary

No codes. Today (2:30pm) when I drove it, the shifting back and forth from OD to D was more pronounced then later (5:30pm) it seemed fine. I'm beginning to agree with my transmission guy, in that it may be some kind of electrical issue rather that mechanical because it is so intermittent.

Hello,
couple things maybe to look at, your engine temp, throttle position sensor, transmission temp, vehicle speed sensor. Live data would be the way to go, when it faults you would be able to see if its being commanded to drop down to the lower gear. Gary

Would I take it my transmission guy for that or someone else to get the Live Data? It had been running great until last Thursday, then it was back to have a different issue depending on it's mood. Could it be a problem with the Transmission Control Module?

There was no code when it started acting up again, but the next time I started the engine a code appeared: Code P1810. This is the same code that appeared before when I replaced the pressure switch I mentioned before.

Hello,
This code is for the manifold pressure switch inside the trans bolted to the valvebody, basically the is a hydraulic switch that tells the computerwhat gear the trans is in. Very simple to change, drop the pan and filter, unplug the switch, then unbolt it(about 6 bolts) and install the new one. If you have live data on a scan tool you can watch the switch work as it shifts up through the gears( you would see the pids switch from high to low, or on to off) Gary

The shifting issue with automatic transmission has officially been resolved. I took my van back in armed with code P1810, to have my transmission guy work on it. The Pressure Switch was fine, but because the problem was intermittent, he decided to trace the wire(s) back to the computer and found the spot where the wire(s) had worn threw causing the wires to short and send a bad signal. Wires are now fixed and the van shifts great... which is kind of weird now since it was bad for so long.
