I am removing a manual transmission from a 96 Isuzu Rodeo. I got it pulled back about a 1/2 inch and cannot go further. What am I doing wrong?

No. the bell has cleared the engine by about a 1/2 inch maybe 3/4. I can stick a finger or thumb in between. I can wiggle the transmission and make a gap about 1 inch or more on one side with the other side touching the engine.

In fact, I can pretty much spin the transmission.

Why are you pulling the transmission out? Something come apart in the bellhousing?

I believe the rear engine seal has failed.

It should pull right out. One possibility is the pilot bearing is stuck on the end of the input shaft and pulled out of the back of the crank. The pilot bearing diameter is bigger than the clutch disc input shaft hole.
You have this thing on a transmission jack? Can you get a boroscope up in there or maybe flash light and mirror to see what is going on?
