Ok, I need some real help here. 02 Saturn sl2 TAAT transmission. I've gone threw three from the junk yard. And now I just rebuilt this last one. They all have the same problem. They shift from first to second. Second to third. Then they drop back down to first and stay there. When I use air pressure to engage the clutches second doesn't hold pressure the same as third and fourth. I had a buddy of mine who's built many a transmission (not a taat though) look at it and he has no answers. Any insight, tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Very strange issue, i built plenty of these and never had that happen. Questions, did you switch over any parts? Do you have any codes present? Is this what the original trans was doing? Common issues with the taat, hard shifts due to the wires on the pressure solenoid and no reverse due to valvebody wear. Gary

Yeah, the original problem was it kept down shifting and shifting hard. We added Lucas and Trans x and the problem improved but wasn't fixed. So I knew it wasn't a computer issue. I can't remember the exact codes but they were for improper shifting. I didn't transfer parts over but I did change the clutches, pistons, gaskets, and there were two broken bearings in the transmission I rebuilt. Question, because 2nd and reverse are connected, is there some pressure loss when using compressed air to engage 2nd gear clutches? Also, just to cross off all possibilities, how would I test the computer?

Do you remember if the codes were maybe P0746 or P0789, maybe P0734. When you air check these clutch packs how much air are you using, i use very little. where are you air checking the clutch drums from? Gary

Umm, not sure how to quantify how much air I'm using. I just hook up a blow tip to an air line and pull the trigger. As for where, there are 5 ports right below the valve body. Opposite the bell housing. From bottom to top it goes 2nd, 3rd, 4th, then two ports for reverse. All the clutches enguage. It's just 2nd seems week. Amy the codes were in the 700s. I just don't remember the exact ones.

When this shifted 2nd was ok? Its possible that some oil maybe used for lube, thats why you may hear a leak. How does it shift from 1-2 and 2-3

Ahh, that makes sense.......The shifting is the problem. It will shift from 1st to 2nd. Then 2nd to 3rd. But then it'll drop back down to first and stay there. And about 2/3 of the time it's shifts hard.

Does it do this everytime, or does it go into failsafe mode and you shut off the car and restart it. Do you have a code reader to pull what codes may be present? Are you able to view live data? Gary

Ahhh, it's usually the simplest answers that are best.....I have the wrong transmissions. The junk yard I went to sold me multiple transmissions for a DOHC. This is a SOHC. Still may have problems. But I doubt it. Thanks for the help guys!

That was next on my list, usually the wrong trans will shift very erraticly such as a 1-4 shift with no 2-3. Shifts from 1st to 3rd, and gear error codes. Glad you got it fixed. Gary
