Solved: Filling my 2016 Sorento with new transmission fluid takes forever Sign In

I assume there's a screen inside the fill port on top of the transmission that prevents fluid from flowing more freely. I know you're supposed to add fluid slowly with a cup (and pouring it into the funnel), but it probably takes me 5 minutes to empty a single 16 oz cup without getting any overflow/spillage (and there are a lot of cups make 2 gallons of new fluid, which is the amount I need to do a full flush). Any tips on getting this to go a little faster?

Note that I'm unscrewing the plastic hex head on the top side of the transmission, and just putting a long funnel up to the hole. I do see what appears to be a small fill hose going right into the area where the plastic hex head is, but the cap at the other end of this hose is in a very hard place to reach and I'm afraid I'll damage it if I try to twist it off with pliers. I haven't tried a socket yet, so maybe that will be the next thing I try. But certainly curious to see what you all have to say about it.

Thanks.

The issue could be lack of venting if you have the funnel jammed in tightly. You might try taking a long piece of vacuum hose and drop it down the funnel to act as a vent. You can pour the fluid along side of it.

PS, it does not have 2 fill ports. Only one of them is a fill port.

Yes, I was confused when I first looked at it because I only expected to see one fill port (not the additional hose & cap). Unless I missed it, the service manual literally says nothing about changing the transmission fluid, so that's why I'm posting here.

I tried lifting the funnel repeatedly to allow some airflow, but I got the same behavior. I'll try your suggestion with the tube.

Thanks.

Is this 2WD or 4WD?

hm.. now that you said that, I'm thinking that's what that extra hose & cap is: a venting tube. Thanks again.

It's the V6 AWD. I did a simple drain & refill last week, and it looked very dirty, so I want to do a flush going forward (I just don't want it to take 3 hours).

You're right. The manufacturer didn't release any fill instructions.

This picture is the 6 speed trans. If this is the one you have, then I would expect the cap at the top of the side cover to be the fill point.

Gary, our resident trans expert will be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, that looks like what I have. Unless Gary says otherwise, I'll try using that to fill next time. Thanks again.

Re: Filling my 2016 Sorento with new transmission fluid takes forever Sign In

After doing some more searching, I did actually find the chapter in the service manual that tells you how to do a trans fluid service.

And lo and behold, it doesn't mention that extra tube and what it's for. So I'm just going to assume it's a vent tube that needs to be uncapped while I put new fluid in the fill hole where the hex head is. If I still find that I can't fill it at a reasonable rate, I'll try your suggestion and put my own vent tube inside the funnel as I fill. Thanks again, much appreciated.

Just wanted to post the link to the service manual instructions for reference.

It's odd that they are calling it an "injection hole". Maybe it requires pressure. Gary will know when he stops by.

We normally don't allow any links but I'll leave that one there.

Hello,
Just to confirm the side cover is plastic? Gary

It does look like plastic on the side. I used Hammer's suggestion of just sticking a vent tube down the funnel, and that worked great. So I don't think I'll bother trying to uncap that additional tube that runs along the top.

Thanks, much appreciated.

The fill/check is on the side pan toward the bottom, that plastic cap is it, you actually have to do 2 fills, after its drained, take the cap out, the 1st fill is with the engine off, fill til it runs out, cap it, start the engine, fill again with engine running until it runs out. In that picture that says additional fill, looks like a vent cap, i wouldnt touch that. Gary

Re: Filling my 2016 Sorento with new transmission fluid takes forever Sign In

Thanks, I'm going to try that later today or tomorrow. I only did the first fill with the engine off, so I'll do both to make sure the level is correct. Just as well, because when I did the drain yesterday (which was my second drain in the last week), the fluid was still pretty brown. Not quite as bad as when I did the first drain, but still not really clean.

Run it through the gears a couple times after starting it before you check the level

Re: Filling my 2016 Sorento with new transmission fluid takes forever Sign In

I did a full flush yesterday, since I don't think it's necessary to pull the drain plug and clean it for a 3rd time at this point (seemed easier to just disconnect the sending hose and let it spit into a bucket). After checking the level with engine shut off, I started it up, went slowly through the gears, then topped it off again until full.

Thanks again for the help. I'm just wondering if there's an easy method for checking the fluid level & condition periodically on transmissions like this? There's no dipstick, so the only safe way I currently know is to either remove the fill/check plug or disconnect the hose.

I would remove the fill/check plug if you want to check the fluid level or condition. Gary
