Sonic transmission bang-now no drive

2012 Chevrolet Sonic
1.8 L automatic
38,000 miles
Right off the bat you should know I'm an idiot. I bought a rebuildable 2012 Chevy Sonic 1.8 automatic with 38K miles at auction, and rebuilt the wrecked front end. Unfortunately, I forgot to top up the transmission fluid that got pumped out of the broken tranny cooler.
I took it for a test drive, and within a half a block I got on the throttle pretty hard. It accelerated well for about 2 seconds, and then there was a solid bang from the transmission. Now there is no drive, no reverse, and when I put it into park, there is a ratcheting grinding sound. Park does not hold the car. Drive and reverse produce a barley audible rumbling sound.
Can anyone tell me what likely failed inside the tranny? Or is it a torque converter problem?

First check the drive axles and hubs to make sure that you dont have a driveline issue.
Do this at your own risk: If brakes are in good working order- Apply park brake, block wheels, lift front end enough to get wheels off the ground and to be able to see underneath. Have a helper apply brake and put in gear while you try to find the source of the rumble. Check over entire axle shaft and hub. Try to see if the output shaft from trans is stripped and spinning inside axle shaft.

Hard to say with both a 'salvaged' car and the loss of trans how much more than costmetics you'll need which is why it was auctioned off basically AYOR from the get go.
For now because park doesn't hold see if you can turn a 1/2 shaft by hand without turning a wheel or slipping/ratcheting with one or both wheels on ground or held still. If so it has a problem with splines and who knows what else with an accident car?

You guys were right. The left axle must have been partly pushed out of the transmission differential carrier from the accident. When I got on the throttle, it ground off the splines from the end of the axle, and ate the retaining circlip. Thank goodness the axle splines were softer metal than the differential carrier gear. I installed a new axle, and all is well. Thank you both for your input.
