TRANSAXLE NOT FUNCTION

I HAVE A 1995 MITSUBISHI GALANT S WITH A 2.4L 4 CYL. AUTO TRANS. TWO NIGHTS AGO, I STARTED TO THE GROCERY STORE. I GOT ABOUT HALF WAY THERE AND REALIZED IT WAS AFTER 9:00 PM (STORE CLOSING). I PROCEEDED TO MAKEA TIGHT LEFT "U" TURN AROUND OFF THE RIGHT SIDE SOME ACROSS THE PAVEMENT, AT THE END OF A DRIVE FROM A BUSINESS, GOINT ABOUT 2 FEET BEYOND THE PAVEMENT. AS I JUST STARTED UPON THE DRIVE/ENTRANCE-NO HOLES OR DROP-OFFS,I HEARD A LOUD "THUNK". THE CAR STOPPED. I PUT IT IN REVERSE-THE ENGINE JUST SPUN.L I PUT IT IN THE OTHER 3 DRIVE POSITIONS AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I CHECKED THE SHIFT LINKAGE POSITION. WHEN IN "NEUTRAL", THE CORRESPONDINGS HOLES SEEMED TO MATCH UP FINE. I CHECKED THE SHAFTS OFF THE BLOCK AND THEY SEEMED TO BE "RIGID". I CHECKED THE HALF-SHAFTS AND DID NOT NOTICE ANY VISIBLE PROBLEMS. I WOULLD LIKE TO KNOW OF ANY POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS THAT I, AS AN EXPERIENCED "LAY MECHANIC" (NOT WELL-VERSED IN FRONT--WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES), CAN TAKE LTO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I AM UNEMPLOYED AT THE MOMENT AND IN FORECLOSURE AND DO NOT HAVE FUNDS TO HAVE AAN AUTO MECHANIC TO CHECK IT OUT-MUCH LESS TO REAIR IT. I BELIEVE A USED TRANSAXLE WAS PUT IN IT BEFORE I BOUGT IT ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO. IT IS A GREAT LITTLE CAR. I GET FROM 26.8 TO 61.4MPG (BIG TAIL WIND-51.25MPG SAME TRIP-NO WIND.) AS YOU CAN SEE, IT'S A "KEEPER". CAN IT BE SOMETHING IN THE "DRIVE" HOUSING OF THE AXLE? IS IT "DIRECT" DRIVE, CHAIN DRIVE, BELT DRIVE? AS I SAID-I'M NOT EXPERIENCED IN FRONT-WHEEL DRIVES. ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANX. ED BASS BOONE, IOWA

My 1st though was a bad axle while reading your post. You said you checked the 1/2 shafts so if they are ok then you are going to be looking at an internal problem.... You can double check those to be sure. 1st thing put it in drive and give it a little gas, if the speedo works that would be an indication of a broken axle. Sometimes you can't tell by looking. Block the wheels, put the park brk on and have a helper put it in drive and give it a little gas and see if you can see a shaft turning. You need to be extremely careful doing this. You need to be in a position to see the shaft but also in a spot that is safe if "something catches" and the car starts moving..... Also the inner joint could've popped out of the trans slightly. Jack the car up and look at both sides to make sure they're both seated properly......

THANX FOR YOUR ADVICE AND TIME. I WENT OUT, STARTED UP THE ENGINE. THE SPEEDO DID NOT MOVE IN D, 2 OR 1. I DID NOTICE-THOUGH FAINT- A CHANGE IN VIBRATION/SOUND WHEN I WENT FROM THE "R" POSITION INTO THE "N" POSITION-AS IF SOMETHING WAS TRYING TO "CATCH" IN "R"-BUT NOT FROM "N" INTO THE D,2,1 POSITION. I SURE HOPE IT IS AN "EXTERNAL" PROBLEM I CAN f"LAY ON MY BACK" AND REPAIR!! THANX AGAIN FOR YOUR ADVICE AND TIME. ED BASS BOONE, IOWA

SIDOM, I GOT UNDER THE CAR TODAY. I CHECKED ALL SHAFTS. ALL ARE CONNECTED TO WHEELS AND OUTPUTS ON ENGINE AND ARE SOLID. I DON'T SEE ANY LEAKAGE. I MANUALLY TURNED ONE WHEEL IN ONE DIRECTION, THE OTHER WHEEL TURNED IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION-BOTH OUTPUT SHAFTS TURNING IN APPROPRIATE DIRECTIONS. I STARTED THE ENGINE AND PUT IN "D". WHEELS DID NOT TURN. I MANUALLY TURNED WHEEL AND LISTENED FOR ANY NOISE-NO NOISE. I TOOK OFF THE FLYWHEEL INSPECION PLATE-FLYWHEEL IN GOOD SHAPE-NO FLUID/RESIDUE ON FLYWHEEL. IT IS MY FEAR THAT THE T-AXLE WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED/REPLACED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. CAN YOU THINK OF ANY OTHER SOLUTIONS (ON CAR) THAT MAY SOLVE MY PROBLEM? THANX FOR LISTENING. ED BASS BBONE, IOWA

unfortunately, this trans is going to have to come out and be opened up. Your information as to what you see under it after following Sidom's advice indicates internal failure needing overhaul to repair. Wish I had better news for you, but such is the nature of the beast with moving parts.

Really not too much I can add...... Unfortunately looks like the trans is gonna have to come out.... The cheapest route may be to try to find a use one.......... It's always a gamble but would probably be the cheapest option at this point. Good luck....
