Tempo Tranny Troubles

I have a '94 Tempo auto. The car goes fine, if you keep the speed below 45 Mph, and don't drive more than 1/2 hr. Otherwise, it won't push(pull) outside of low gear, and the speedometer fails. It still upshifts, on downhill grades, or if you tach it to about 5500 RPM. I replaced the VSS, to no avail. I've only had the car a few months. It was a gift from my sister, she only drove it in-town, since new, and was unaware of any problems.

You didn't say but it sounds like this is a standard shift. Just an idea here, change the trans fluid - no harm in that no matter what, I like approved systhetics, and check for proper electical connections to the trans. Good luck,

It is an auto. Fluid is fine (not burnt, shiny, or gritty) and has been changed regularly. Elecrical connection (VSS) is intact and functional.

I really want to see this get fixed as with the info it sounds like a cared for car. You've said the fluid has been changed (Most people never do that) so I would hate to see you get stuck with a total overhaul as it just doesn't seem that's it. I'm am NOT a trans specialist but know some stuff about them. I have a clump of hair (joking) missing over this as I can't make the connection with this car not doing this until fully warmed up and then behaves going downhill?? Just a shot in the dark to try. Disconnect neg battery cable for a good while (15 min) and see if that makes a difference. This should clear out any memory in the car's computer. Usually a minute will do but I'd let it go longer. You will have to reset the darn clock AGAIN! and the radio pre sets. The clock is easy, and the radio in that vintage Ford you just get to the station you want and hold the button you want it remembered at - radio will go silent and when it comes back on it remembers that spot. (if OEM radio) Please post back with the solution for all to know. It can really help with forums and the folks who tend to them. Good luck, Tom
