Thump in transmission?

Vehicle in question: 2005 Ford Escape XLT No Boundaries V6, Auto Trans, 4x2 w/ auto-4x4 Approx. 108,000 miles Recently, if I let off of the accelerator while driving, allow the vehicle to coast for a few seconds, then press down on the accelerator, I feel and hear a thump as the transmission re-engages. It doesn’t happen every time, but it happens enough to worry me. It only happens when going from coasting to pressing down on the accelerator. It doesn’t happen when the cruise control is on. If I coast, then apply the brakes, and then step on the accelerator, it doesn’t happen. It also doesn’t happen when accelerating from a dead stop. Could this be a transmission problem, or a broken motor / trans mount? I want to get an opinion or 2 before I take it to a mechanic. Thanks!

Is this something nthat only happens over 50MPH? Is it a hard bang or are you going more by engine sound? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

It mainly happens at sub-highway speeds. For instance....current speed limit 45, approaching 35 mile limit....coast, then step on gas...feel and hear a thump when drive train re-engages from coast. It's not coming from the engine. And it's felt more than heard. It's really hard to describe....maybe like a quick studder, then the transmission engages.

I was thinking it might be the torque converter locking up for overdrive but the speed is too low for that. Check all your fluid levels and if it's full, then it may be time to have it inspected by a transmission specialist.
