Trans Pressure Sensor keeps coding

Hey guys. I've got a 2002 Dodge Stratus 2.4L MFI SOHC 4cyl with 90K miles. Had a transmission leak. Took car to trusted shop. They replaced the Solenoid pac. Worked fine for about a week, then engine light came on, trans goes into limp mode (stays in 2nd gear) and the OBDII code is P0846 A/T 2-4 Pressure Switch Circuit Malfunction. The shop then replaced the Solenoid pack two more times, with same result, i.e. fine for week, then engine light / limp mode / code P0846. Can someone give me some advice on why 3 diff solenoid packs might kick up this repeated code? Dirty fluid? What else?

Just because you get a code referring to a specific sensor doesn't men the sensor itself is the cause. It can be the related wiring or the TCM itself. Make sure the trans case is grounded as that sensor relies on that. Hey Hammer Time -- Thanks. The wiring rings true. The pic below shows what the wires look like coming off the solenoid pack. You can see the new solenoid at the top of the photo, but the wires are exposed and covered in grease. Is this normal? Should those wires be inside some shielding? Note also that the metal flange that these wires are attached to is bolted to nothing -- it just hangs loose and presumably bounces around. The shop that replaced the solenoid 3 times has a history of just throwing parts at a problem, instead of diagnosing it first. So, what other suggestions can I go back to the shop with? After three failed repairs, apparently its going to be my job to suggest other possibilities. Also, can you give me some idea of how I would insure that the trans case is grounded, as you mentioned? Thanks again.

You can't possibly know the wiring is good with visual inspection. Wiring issues are very difficult to locate and require extensive testing to find. They are rarely obvious and they can occur anywhere from the solenoids to the TCM. It can be contacts at a plug, solder joints at the contact or even internally beneath the insulation. You shouldn't be suggesting anything to a shop. If they are competent, they don't need or want advice. If they are not, then you are at the wrong shop. You should never turn an electrical issue over to a shop that uses the parts cannon. Just an observation of that and the metal is probably supposed to go around the metal line shown and stick there? Under that plug is probably a plastic, barbed thing if there going thru a hole in that metal. I'm not sure that's the issue or a ground there but it just doesn't even look right? Some oils and grease @ 20 years old could be normal or spilled if filling something or just topping off another fluid/oil? 3 tries is enough IMO for the same thing every wire you see there means something for a purpose car makers don't waste wire for nothing.
