Trans question Sign In

The 99 BMW 323i I recently bought had the transmission light 3 times now. Paid a shop today to pull the tranny code and it was the P0740 converter lock up clutch slipping. They said need new tranny or torque converter. It's a GM A5s360r I'm pretty sure, I'll check the next time I'm under there. The Trans shifts fine to me and I've had 2 go on me before so I know what it feels like. I researched and it looks like the following could fix the problem but wanted input to see if I'm going in the right direction. Any thoughts? Tranny has 155k on it.

Change fluid and filter
Change FCC solenoid
Replace torque converter

Re: Trans question Sign In

Changing the fluid and filter won't fix mechanical damage. I doubt a new solenoid will either. Your torque convertor clutch is slipping when the ECM commands it to lock, which is the only time it kicks in and does anything anyhow. If you replace the torque convertor that means you pulled the transmission out already to get to it. But the failing clutch in it has put pieces of itself into your entire transmission and the short term fix of a torque convertor will probably result in a bad tranny plus a new torque convertor full of bad trans parts so it would have to be changed yet again.

Thanks for the reply Nick. The car is shifting fine and the light has been coming on maybe 1 time in every 100 miles. Bought this for my sons first car so trying to make it reliable though. Think I should not worry about the fluid change and just drive it until it dies? Guess I should start looking for a tranny.

A beamer for your son's first car?! No problem - people can do that but the car is a PITA and expect expensive problems,

Re: Trans question Sign In

Believe me it's not that nice of a car just wanted something safe and was looking in the 3500 price range and this was definetly a better deal than the others I looked at. You are right as far as maint repair labor goes. I do my own wrenching or otherwise I would not have touched it. The guy got one over on me with the tranny though as The car shifts fine. The parts for these cars are reasonable as long as you buy them online and not from the stealer (dealer). I've already replaced the cooling system which was the weak link on these cars and rebuilt the suspension. Now looks like I gotta find a tranny

LOL..... and yet you are here with a problem that you can't deal with on a car that none of us would have gotten involved with, given a choice.

The only thing worse than working on a BMW is working on a BMW that is a hacked up, abused mess.

Re: Trans question Sign In

Rebuilding the transmission internals is one thing I won't do. I was here looking for some advise not to get smacked down on the type of car I'm having an issue with. Thanks for the help from Nick who is the only person who gave a knowledge response. Hammer - if that's the response from a Moderator on this site I'm out of here. Please cancel my account.

We can't cancel accounts here. Perhaps owner can but can't reach him. Sorry for your dismay. Just let it blow away if you wish and choice to not see anymore notices should appear for you.

All volunteers here and if that isn't good enough it's fine with me but it's YOUR choice,
