Transmission: No Gears

All: I have a 1992 Chevy Corsica, 2.2L auto trans. It wasn't shifting into 3rd gear, so we changed the fluid. Now...it won't go into gear at all! I'm thinking it's the TCS (TCC, are they the same?) The car had been sitting for about a year, but it seems it wants to get moving again. Any ideas on this one ?? Thanks

Hello, Like to start with the basics, check the fluid level but look at both sides of the stick, if one side is lower that is the true reading. Did you put a filter in this? Gary

Hi Gary...Thanks for the reply The fluid is good and we got a filter kit when we changed the fluid. I went out last night to try it and when you shift into what should be the gear, the idle slows down like it wants to shift, but there's no place to go. I'm going to check the schematic in my Haynes manual to see if there should be any voltage present at the connector on the side of the transmission. If that's not it, I might start leaning toward the torque converter.

Hello, Ok, let make sure i have this right, it wasnt going into 3rd, so you changed the fluid and filter and now the car does not move, when it did move before the filter and fluid change. Dont worry about voltage the tcc comes in around 40 mph, other than that is all hydrualic. Does the trans make any kind of noise that changes with engine rpm. Gary

Thanks for reply Gary... No noises at all, regardless of RPM. Should I disconnect a cooler line when the car's running to see if there's any pressure in the transmission?

Hello, Im thinking you may have a filter problem. since it did move before(even though the filter is new) was there anything in the pan? So this doesnt move at all in drive or reverse? Gary

Hi Gary...nothing in the pan but the "usual" silver dust in the bottom and on the magnet. There is no drive, reverse or anything in between...just park. Since it's new fluid, maybe I should pull the filter and put the fluid back and see if anything changes?

You can try that, may have to overfill it. Question, do you feel any kind of engagement when going from park to drive or reverse. Gary

Hi Gary...It seems like it wants to go in gear because the idle speed slows down, but it just won't do it.

You may want to try it without the filter as a test to see if this will move. Gary

Is the fluid way up on the stick or normal level?
