Hey everyone! So the other day me and a buddy mechanic replaced my radiator bc the garage wanted $500 for a new one. When we undid the hoses some transmission fluid leaked out otherwise the replacement was successful. Before he left my friend told me to check my fluids before I went out anywhere. The next day I completely forgot to check them and went to pick up my wife from work (19mi). The car ran fine on the way there but in the parking lot of her work, the car would go slow then hesitate and jerk every 10-15 feet. Thankfully we were across the street from an autozone. I checked under the hood for leaks and there didnt appear to be any so I put a quart of transmission fluid in (Valvoline Dex/Merc SP-III) but only managed to get the level to the line where it needed to be maybe a millimeter below. The 19 mile drive home was fine but this morning it started up fine but I couldnt even make it down the street without it hesitating and jerking again so I slowly backed it into the driveway. What confuses me is how it was able to run like it was fresh off the lot on the way home yet felt like it was going to break down the next morning without any apparent leaks. So I was wondering, should I put more fluid in it and see if I can take it around the block a few times, drain it completely and fill it back up with new fluid, or take it to the garage. Keep in mind I havent had any problems with the transmission until after we put in the new radiator. Any help would be great! Thanks you for your time.

Site now has a transmission specialty person who will no doubt stop by but I'll chime in now that you quite possibly did some real physical damage both running low and really not knowing by dumping a quart into the car if that was correct either and damage was probably already done.
Without adequate fluid level it plain can't pump fluid to pressure a wild variety of items to operate or too weak of pressure so fast wear can happen basically taking out the transmission for a complete overhaul!
At this point I suggest getting it to a real transmission specialty shop or person with the info on what happened and get the best possible hands on diagnosis as to the actual condition it's in now. Can't say from here but if it lacked pressure and was slipping no real telling what wore out, broke and subsequently harmed more and probably did,

Hello,
The fluid was only a quart low? When you add trans fluid you have to read both side of the stick and always go with the lower side. While the jerking was going on any check engine lite turn on? or overdrive lite flashing?

I apologize, I meant to add that I poured in a little at a time and kept checking the dipstick. After I put in the quart it was right at the line but the Autozone closed before I could get another bottle.

Yea I just talked to a friend who is pretty good with cars and he says it could possibly be that some of the debris/gunk got settled in the bottom after we detached the hoses and that could be a possibility of why it ran so good after I put that first quart in and started immediately slipping again the next morning. Im going to take it to the garage in front of my neighborhood and get it drained and filled then ask them to show me the dipstick when theyre done just to be on the safe side.

When you say the trans is slipping, does it rev up and have trouble moving? After the raditator job was done, how is your heat? Sometimes the system gets air in it and may have to be bled. Gary

Yes it revs up a little bit then gives a jerk. Havent checked the heat yet. Before the radiator was replaced the heat would go in and out at times

Got the engine running for 10 minutes. No heat coming out of the vents and backed up about 15-20 fee without problems

You may want to retrace your steps. You probably have air in the system. Usually have to raise the front wheels to try to get some of the air out. Or google how to bleed your type of car. gary

Took it to a transmission shop to be safe. They had to add 3 quarts of fluid. Then he did a leak test for the radiator and pressurized the tubes or something I cant remember how he worded it but its working fine now. The acceleration feels a little slow but it got me from A to B without any hard jerks
