Transmission Problem? 1999 Mitsubishi Pajero (Shogun) Sign In

Hi everyone,

1999
Mitsubishi
Pajero (Shogun)
3.5L Petrol AUTO TRANS
215000kms

Here goes, there's something odd happening when I try to accelerate sometimes. Basically what happens is my foot goes down and instead of changing to a lower gear the car struggles along with the gear its in, this happens with a bit of bunny hopping. Again, this only happens sometimes, usually if I accelerate VERY gently there's no problems. I noticed when it happened today the oil pressure built up from the normal 45lbs/in to about 60lbs/in, not sure if that's related. Sometimes it happens under light acceleration too, kind of like a car would if it was a little low on trans fluid, but in this case my fluid is good (although the reading was very high so there may even be too much). If I keep my foot down it keeps doing it, feels like the trans is slipping, but if I take my foot off and put it back down it usually fixes it. I've also noticed that when the car is idling at the lights, very occasionally it will (just for a moment) clunk violently a couple of times, feels a lot like what happens if you take the clutch off without accelerating in a manual. The only things that come to mind are either a dirty throttle body or its the throttle position sensor, I'm in no way a mechanic though so I could be way off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I'd like to thank anyone who responds in advance. It seems like its been getting worse lately and the car has started developing an odd smell after driving, smalls nothing like oil or coolant, definitely something burnt though.

Thanks very much :)

Not really sure what type of trans you have, but is a check engine light on,if there are codes present it may give some type of direction. Gary

Hi Gary,

No check engine light yet, I haven't got a working scanner at the moment either :( I can however tell you that I'm 80% sure the transmission model is 30-43LE.

Super select so I can go rear wheel, four, low or high range. I drive around in rear wheel mode though, I could drive around in four wheel mode tomorrow and see if it still does it :)

Thanks again

Does this problem happen with the same gears, im thinking maybe normal driving this could be making like a 1-3 shift, but light throttle its ok. Just wondering where is the car located? Gary (im in new york)

I'll have to pay closer attention to which gear its in, I believe the car was in third when it happened today and it should definitely have shifted down into at least second when I put my foot down but it just never happened, was going about 65kmph when it happened so I don't think it would have made it down to first. The car is South Australia so I think taking a look might be out of the question :)
