Transmission Problem?? Sign In

I just purchased a '97 Dodge Ram Van camper (B3500), auto tranny (46RE?), 8cyl., 5.9, 138K miles. Under load there is a whinning sound (no whine when let off accelerator) that becomes quite loud at 60 mph which I suspected was possibly in differential. My mechanic thinks it is from tramsmission planetary gear saying it is quite common with this vehicle.
I have not been able to find any applicable info regarding this problem. Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
Thanks,

Hello,
Being the fact that the noise goes away when you let off the gas, i would be looking at the differential, not very common for the O/D planet to make that noise.
Are all of your mounts good? Gary( im a transmission shop owner and i also rebuild diffs as well)

Thanks much.
RE mounts are you referring to engine and tranny mounts? They have not been checked. How would they cause such a whining problem? Also, if it is from differential is it more likely to be the pinion bearings, ring/pinion gears or something other?
I have owned many vehicles in my almost 8 decades and am somewhat savy on most auto mechanical problems (not the new electronic stuff!!) but have never had this problem before. My next question is. who is most likely to be able to provide a qualified diagnosis before digging in to rebuilding the tranny/differential -- a transmission shop, drive line specialist, general repair shop ??? I live in a small west-central Florida town and there are not that many "specialists" locally and to add to that quandry is that we only moved here a year ago so I have limited knowledge on the locals.
Thanks again, I appreciate your thoughts.

Hello,
Yes your engine and trans mounts, if by chance the rubber part of the mount is bad and you have metal to metal you may get a noise, make sure that trans mount gets checked. I would think that you have a ring and pinion noise, if you had bad bearings you would hear a growling noise and not a whine. Maybe you could search the internet or ask the local repair shop. Im in the new york area. Gary
