Transmission advice for my '89 Buick Century Sign In

Hi,
I'm looking for advice on repairs for my '89 Buick Century with 97,000 miles. I took it to sears auto center for some brake repair and the mechanic there said I should have the transmission looked into. I have a diagnostic appointment for next week at a shop that specializes in transmissions. What will a diagnostic be able to tell? Can they anticipate a transmission breakdown from the diagnostic? Max I'm willing to pay for transmission repair is $1500. If repair costs go beyond that I'm going to look for a new car. The diagnostic I'm getting is free. Is there a diagnostic that I could pay for that would reveal more about the transmission and what would the better diagnostic be called?

Thanks for the advice

The why don't you just wait and see what the shop tells you.

Hi Hammer Time,

Thanks for your reply. I'm a confused as to why I didn't receive a direct answer to my question. Please explain your response and why you felt it was unnecessary to reply to my question directly. A response that directly answers the question I asked will be valuable to me.

Thank you

Because at this point you have nothing but a Sears "oil changer's" opinion that you have a problem. Let's see what a professional has to say about the situation before you start trying to diagnose something that may or may not even be there.

buicktransmission Agree with Hammer Time but is like me to expound a bit much sometimes. Sears to me is just what he said, and "oil change" joint that takes on more.

You've set some value of $1,500 that you would invest in this car or quit with it as I see it.
Sport - I love older to plain old stuff. I could legitimately quote you $1,500 on just brakes which is what you went there for now we are talking about a transmission?

Whaaaaa the heck happened? Free diagnostics suggests make a laundry list of things easily. Take a look in their shop and make a guess how many tech were even born by 1989 never mind routinely deal with pre OBDII vehicles now?

I could tell you just replace every single light bulb on this car and justify it at an insane cost of labor. Add every piece of rubber that's involved with cooling system, brake system, fuel system.

In short absolutely anything could be at risk by the age alone or not. Sears IMO isn't the place to deal with this unless totally different than ones I know of.

If you really want this as a dependable usable car I strongly suggest paying for known professional tech(s) at a shop known for having professional help with a good reputation.

For this I'd avoid dealers as they can be great and mandatory but not at this age of vehicle.

See what they say but suggest you don't have work beyond very basic things at grocery store type auto places. BTW - these are the simplest brakes there are but you can still get into total troubles if not done properly.
