Transmission disengages

1996 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 I6 115K. When coming to a stop or when driving in stop and go traffic the transmission disengages. I rev the engine and the car moves forward a little for a few seconds and then eventually it catches . On my way to and from work I've been shifting the car into 1-2 and if there's open road ill move into 3 and eventually 4. Is there enough information to discern if this is a mechanical issue (transmission is toast) or an electrical issue (solenoid that can be changed without removing transmission)? Fluid is nice and red. TIA

Hello, Question, you had said the fluid is nice and red, tell me, have you checked the fluid level? and tell me how did you check the level? (ex: car running in park). Gary

The reason why i ask is because there is a certain way to check the fluid to get a true reading, thats why i questioned how did you check it. Gary

It's fine, I just don't want the thread to get sidetracked to the point where someone who can answer the question will not read through the back and forth. I know how to check the fluid level. It's not that.

To try to i.d what trans you have, this is a 4.0 and is it a grand cherokee or just a cherokee.

The trans is called an AW-4,(trans is also used in toyota) 3 solenoids in this unit, 2 shift and a lock-up , not an eletrical issue or a solenoid issue. One more question does this happen cold and hot, or just when the car is hot?

Thanks for the response. The first 2 or 3 times are I turn the car on it won't usually happen. Once it starts getting a little warm it begins. Doesn't happen every time- it's just getting more frequent.

Assuming reverse is ok, that would eliminate your pump, pressure reg valve and filter and the o/d clutch, which would leave more than likely a pressure loss at the foward clutch drum. This is not a common issue with this unit, they are pretty good transmissions, most common issue is no shift condition due to a bad TPS.

Thank you for your time and patience. Do you think that this will cause a general failure in the near future or will I probably be able to drive like this for a few more months?

Hello, Sorry for the late reply, my shop is packed(crazy busy) I want to check my clutch application chart, because sometimes the foward clutch stays on all the time, meaning gears 1-4 but im not 100% sure about this one, when i get back to the shop in the morning i want to check something and will get back to you. Ok, the foward clutch is on in all foward gears, so if in fact your problem is a pressure loss at the foward clutch, it is possible for this to eventually stop moving foward, how long will it take, not sure of that, being the fluid looks good and does not smell burnt you may get the time you need.
