2003 Chevy S-10
2.2L 4 Cylinder
2WD
280,000 miles
This started a month ago with the shifter vibrating really bad during acceleration and a grinding noise when accelerating. I replaced the clutch, pressure plate, and clutch slave cylinder, also had the flywheel resurfaced. When we removed the original the clutch plate had a broken compression spring and pilot bushing was gone. After replacing these parts the transmission whines/roars (all gear) and shakes the shifter ( mainly in 5th gear) really bad when accelerating. The gears shift smoothly as well which is misleading. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate.?

280K it owed you nothing long ago.
Just plain missing from wear pilot bushing, broken springs it's had issues driven on for some time, no doubt wrecked front shaft of trans and its bearing now in place doesn't know how to handle that if in place?
If only pilot bushing and something there to pull out there was a chance. If truly missing and shaft centering aimlessly into crankshaft not sure which would wear out beyond repair first - hope the trans.
There's a lot of forces right there if you so much as let a trans hang before fastened up never mind this.
First clue was noises it must have made long prior to this. If correct new pilot bushing just set there in hole without pressing it in even some there's real troubles lurking,

It had been running smooth, shifting smooth and everything. The day it started this problem I parked it until I tore into it and replaced the listed parts.

A problem was lurking even if quiet enough to not notice. The primary concept of this STD trans hasn't changed all that much since the 50s or 60s just adding syncro to first gear on all now.
That front splined shaft can't tolerate forces that are not straight on which a pilot bushing does as you see the shaft is smooth where they go together. Many - not rare people will let a trans hang by just that little end on the pilot just for any reason trans would be removed which can and will bend clutch disc and forces on that bronzish pilot bushing which may have plain cracked - IDK never say that just noise from ones that were lacking grease.
Site has a trans total expert but have done my share of just clutches in this type and overhaul of just one whole trans which was chiefly bearings and the synchro rings, check how reverse functioned and if proper and done unless something really worn or bent.
This probably has a bent front shaft now or did for a long time putting high stress on a front bearing which would take some time to show up usually.
What do you want to do? How many miles on how much of this thing is original or really redone if any? Miles have their limits with the best of care on things all over this included.
I really don't know what the first check is I would do except probably at least know crankshaft did in fact take a new pilot bushing properly somehow and think about another transmission totally. Not sure what singe parts are available as it was never a specialty of my work. Many that do, only specialize in trans work but each should know enough about the other things back and forth so the right fixes go to the right people and places if need be,

I'm wanting to get it back up and running as its my daily driver for work and a great gas saver. Is it possible to visually tell if the front shaft is bent? I want to avoid having to buy a new transmission if possible and be dead certain its what I need before purchasing one.

OK: In that I didn't specialize in this I can't know so easily details on parts nor how to verify if OK or not for sure.
Site has a transmission shop owner/operator user name ' gsferraro ' and hope he'll stop by with specifics for current day info for you.
If not go looking thru this section and send him a PM if you wish by clicking on his user name.
Many regulars here can suggest away with superior general knowledge of the situation but his name is Gary is actively in biz in just this IMO is most likely to know the best checks and approach.
Good luck with a fix. Hope there's a common and easy way to get this one taken care of and on to something else to worry about or fix,

Question, did you look at the condition of the input shaft where the pilot bushing rides? Also, do you hear a noise with the car running at a stand still? Gary

I didn't pay a lot of attention to the shaft since the clutch plate was broke, there is a small chirp noise at a stand still.

When you drive the car and hear the noise, does the noise go away in 4th gear. 4th gear in this trans is 1:1 ratio, usually the noise would go away and then come back in 5th. Gary

Yes, I cannot hear anything in 4th gear, but soon as i shift to 5th it starts the noise and vibration even worse.

Hello,
Ok, that pretty much confirms that you have an issue in the trans, possibly bad bearings, if it shifts ok and no grinding going into gears, than i would have to say somewhere in that unit you have a bad bearing(s). Gary

On a job like that it run labor plus parts, on a standard transmission you only change what is bad, so the unit would have to come apart to see whats bad and worn out. Have you priced another unit yet?

That would be th way to go if your looking to save, labor alone would be about 400. If possible sample the oil to see what it looks like. Gary
