I have a 1994 Chrysler Plymouth acclaim v6 automatic. i've had it for 3 years now, and i recently needed to have a used engine put in due to failed head gaskets.
anyway it is February here in Ohio and its getting really cold. as the weather got colder i noticed that my car would have problems shifting from a cold start. usually i would put it in drive, it would drive down my back road just fine and shift up to 2nd gear, then back to 1st just fine as i slowed down at the end of my backroad. i would then turn onto the next street and it would try to shift back into 2nd again but it would suddenly be in neutral. usually if I waited a minute or so for it to "warm up" it would catch and be perfectly fine for the rest of the day.
so this problem became more and more common as the days got colder. this morning it was 3 deg F outside. I let the car sit for a good 5 minutes and then put it into drive. it got stuck in neutral on the turn like it always does, but after it decided to go into gear again i noticed that it was stuck in that gear. i tried going on the express way when i realized that it wouldn't shift at all for me.
so now its stuck in a low gear, i think 2nd gear. it will shift into park and it will shift into reverse just fine, but drive is always second gear.
i tried to be thorough with this description in the hopes that someone might relate to this problem and know of a easy solution. I am really dreading dropping a new tranny in it in the middle of winter, so any other ideas or input would be great.
also worth noting, the transmission fluid was flushed about 15000 miles ago, and it has been topped off ever since, even when cold.

also worth noting, this tranny uses ATF+4 fluid and i think at some point maybe a year ago i put a bit of regular ATF fluid in it. wondering if this difference would actually be that detrimental.

Till our transmission guy stops by why are you having to "top it off" and not fixing the leak? Running low or worse waiting for symptoms of being low sure isn't good for it and can wreck about any,
