Transmission troubleshooting questions. Sign In

2003 Chevy Monte Carlo SS 3.8 116,043 miles

Having some trans concerns. Recently started to shift mildly hard. Mostly from the stopped position into 1st gear. Checked the dip.stick. Nice color fluid as far as I can tell, but seeing black grease like color on the paper towel as well. The fluid is a little bubbly, and the bubbles are over the hot line for sure. Had a crack in my radiator last month. It was replaced. But Idk if the fluid was in the proper area at the get go. Any advice?

Hello,
Your engagement into drive is harsh or the 1-2 shift is harsh? have you scanned for codes? Gary

I don't have a scanner. It's when it's already in drive, then getting into that 1-2 gear getting going from a stop sign or stop light. I've been using my foot a little different on the peddle without having any problems though. Are bubbles a problem to be worried about. If I wanted to drain a little fluid out where would I do that from?

Hello,
You really need to have the car scanned, you may have an 1811 code for the transmission, this may or may not turn the check engine light on. Gary

Thanks Gary. I think I got a plan going forward. I posted on Reddit too and got a good bit of info. Mostly that I was overdue for my filter and fluid to be changed. And a good way to go about that with cleaning out the metal bits in the pan. I definitely want to get a scan too. My light has been on for a bit now since I've had it. I'm going to write that code down. Tahk you sir.

Hello,
Can't hurt to service the trans, but if shifting hard very possible the computer may be adding pressure so the trans will not slip, you would need a good scan-tool to see this info like a snap-on, if you have access to one go into data and look under T.A.P Cells (transmission adaptive pressure).
