Transmission won't shift into overdrive Sign In

I have a 1992 Mercury Tracer, 1.9 with 57,000 miles. I have only had the car for about 6 months and it has never went into overdrive. I was told that the "switch" on the transmission was broke? Does this mean I need a new transmission or can something else be done to fix this.

PLEASE HELP

I just looked and didn't find a torque converter control switch for this but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

Check that all fuses are good with an ohm meter. If there is a switch - does it light up? Don't know as this is probably a Mazda sold thru Mercury.

If all checks out just look for wiring that goes to the trans and see if it's all hooked up.

Last ditch: I hear AAMCO will do a diag for free if sent by AutoZone and would check that out. Perhaps you'll get lucky and it won't be a big deal.....

Good luck,

T

Re: Transmission won't shift into overdrive Sign In

I'll try to help here. the overdrive on this car is probably controled by solenoids inside the transmission unless there is a button on your shifter lever inside the car. It is not a terribly expensive fix but not really something a DIY'r should do. the car is essentially a ford escort and we know how many of those are around. i'd take it to a reputable tranny shop and have it checked and/or estimated.
