Hey, I'm driving a 97 Gm 1ton with a 454, 158,000km. I went out to backup my truck one morning and it wouldent backup, or go forward. you could feel pop "into gear" but just revved like it was in neutral. transfer case was fine in and in 2wd. I put it in 4wd low and it moved. now when i drive it, it drives fine in 2wd again like normal. not sure what that was all about. transmission fluid is up and is clear and doesent smell burnt or anything. any advice would be much appreciated, thanks

4L80E should still have reverse and 3nd as default if electrical power to the solenoids is lost. Your going to have to connect a transmission pressure gauge and monitor the line pressure when the problem is occurring. If you don't have any pressure or the pressure is extremely low you could a major leak inside the transmission or the converter is draining off over night due to a faulty check valve. If you have pressure, then you have a leaking apply component seal or leaking check ball. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

If i have any of these problems would it be more cost effective to get a rebuild 4l80e than to fix the problem? thanks

@ about 100,000 miles if you need this truck to work hard and count on it I'd do it up and just scream at the cost. Possible $3,500 or so $US, T

Tom's prolly right. If you do indeed find out it is internal, a rebuild would be recommended. 4L80E are known for bushing wear problems. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
