Won't shift into gear Sign In

Hi there I have a 1995 Ford Taurus SHO 3.0L DOHC 100K.
I just bought the car and they said the clutch was bad.
The problem im having is im not sure if its the clutch.
You have to start it I have gear to go (by the way its a cable clutch) and it wont stall out if clutch pedal is depressed but when driving it wont shift to a different gear. Its like the clutch is not engaging all the way or something. If anyone can help that would be great I would love to get some feedback on what you think before I spend 800 dollars to have the clutch done thanks.

Why don't you re-read that yourself and tell me if you understand a word of it.

Ok sorry about the confusion. You have to start it in gear and when you go to shift the gear to the next one it wont go into gear and it doesn't grind either just wont go in. It feels as if the clutch is engaging but mot all the way because with clutch pressed down it wont stall out but its not allowing you to shift either.

This is where your confusing us:

The engine isn't susposed to stall out if you have the clutch disengaged (pedal down). If it doesn't stall the engine when you have the transmission in gear and the clutch engaged (pedal up) or the engine revs up while your accelerating, the clutch is worn out/slipping.

If you can't get the transmission into gear with the engine running, but can get it into gear with the engine turned off, the clutch isn't disengaging or spinning down. Your probably going to have to pull the transmission and replace the clutch assembly.

If and when you have the transmission out to replace the clutch, you should also have the flywheel machined and the rear main seal replaced.

It would also be a good idea to inspect your clutch cable adjuster and replace the clutch cable. The cable stretches from use and should be replaced when the clutch assembly is replaced.
