Were you moving while trying to shift into 4wd?
If not was the durngo in park, drive, reverse, or neutral?
If you heard grinding that leads me to first think you were in gear and they didn't mesh up to make the transition?
What did you have to do to get it back into 2wd?

Crawl under it and look up where the t-case shifter linkage goes into the body. Have someone move it from 2wd to 4wd. Is the steel eaten badly enough from the rust it is letting it flex out? That would make it not move the linkage enough to fully grab the position you want. I'm in Eau Claire and feel your pain from the salt.

On the upside we got further into the playoffs than the Vikings or the Bears.

i was driving when i tried to shift into 4x4,as fae as getting it back in 2 wheel drive i just kept playing with the shifter
just got the truck last year and had no problems shifting, the little 4x4 lite never came on and it seemed to go into 4 low,
but the shifter was not in the right spot where it should have been it seemed to be where netural was,im not sure what to think so any thing you could do to help would be great
ill wait to crawl under it for now too nasty out but thanks for your help and hell yeah the pack will be back,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Dennis

Chrysler vehicles liked to mount the 4wd lever onto just plain sheetmetal on that tunnel. Works fine until it lives a decade or so in Saltville where we are. Had this a lot on Jeep Cherokees and such. Eventually the metal just flexes out when you're trying to move the lever instead of that motion moving the t-case linkage. Also bear in mind this uses some plastic bushings where linkage parts meet that can go out. Once you get under with a good light you'll be able to see it. If the mounting is all rusted up, about the only fix is to pull the seats and carpet out of the interior and get some steel to weld in. If you have and old washer or dryer that is junk the steel on the sides of them is great for that. Its thick enough and had a baked on enamel finish. Put plenty of floorboards I've done up that way. You would need a welder and some fabrication skills to do it. Otherwise I think you can buy that section of tunnel pre-made as a patch panel. Body shops in your area would know the suppliers certainly.

Still remember the F-250 I learned how to drive on. If it was too cold to crack the window but you wanted to throw out your cigarette just move the floormat and you could see the road under you. Got pulled over for no seatbelt once. The rocker panel had rotted out bad enough the lower mount of the seat belt fell through and was hanging in the breeze for the cop to see. He was actually laughing about it.

Gotta love salt. The freezing rain is starting a bit now in EC, should be getting you too.
