altima transmission won't engage reverse

2000 Nissan Altima 2.4 engine was replaced with 1999 2.4 out of a 99 Nissan Altima. kept torque converter matched w/2000 transmission. all this fastened to the 1999 2.4. engine was fine before engine broke and threw a rod thru the side of engine. Left lower if standing by drivers fender or rear of transmission. Some might say left. lower. front.... Now transmission will not go into reverse. It sounds like it wants too but no. Tried to adjust linkage cable, changed fluid and filter to no avail.hopefully i have told you enough help you 'all help me. thanks in advance.
