Fairly new to working on cars. I think my flexplate is bad. I want to inspect it. Anyone know where the inspection plate is and how too get it off? Thanks.

New to working on cars? Best is to get experienced help FIRST and learn it. You should get a view if you removed starter motor can turn engine from there or bolt to harmonic balancer up front.
If rusty at all get help you can easily get into trouble moving things or break things.
I'll stay out but if determined why do you suspect it at all?

Thanks for the response. I have done a few repairs on my truck and have yet to make a mistake. I'm not new to fixing things, but I am newer to working on cars.

I have no intention of dropping the transmission to fix it. I don't have the tools anyways. I just want to check the flexplate to see if the teeth are damaged or to see if there is a crack. I'm trouble shooting possible causes for the noise. A local Autozone worker listened to a recording I made of the noise and suggested I test the flexplate. He seemed fairly convinced.

There's a chirping/grinding sound around where the transmission and engine meet. The sound is cyclical. It's not constant. It has happened a few times in the past few days. I believe it happens when the engine is cold, but I could be wrong. My truck drives perfect other than the noise.

Said I'd stay out but here I am. Try some stuff first before anything: Some can have starters not quite on right the 4.3 is a small block V8 Chev with two cyl. cut off - it really is!
So, the block dates back to OMG WWII or close is fundamentals. Starter could need shims to back it away if you touched it last or another might not do something right away but soon. Rare they can also just be loose or held by one bolt and still work! Oh, oh - that's a mistake. Rarer is they can bust off a corner of engine block you don't want to find that - game over.
The covers for a "flex plate" and ring gear some can be so close if sheet metal types can usually just bend one away without anything more. Been ages since that happened to me but did - assorted GM vehicles though then later became plastic junk - oh yes love that plastic!
Starter drives are on top of this starter can go whacked. They are spring loaded to retract when not in operation and some just don't well or enough.
If you find that decide. You'll get funny looks if you replace just the solenoid and drive assy. nobody does that if bad toss for a rebuilt, whole unit ready. The small wires can snap off easily if you did to just take it out and check that one's gone.
Push on things, check tightness.
The dangerous part is pushing on things with engine running! Duh! Other is metal on hot wire the main battery positive goes to starter solenoid stay away from that with metal with battery connected.

Appreciate your vigor and willingness to learn. There's always something to trip you up it's a machine of any kind can take endless assorted tools to get at one bolt just right.
If flex plate is really bad, warped or damaged YOU ARE TAKING THE TRANSMISSON OUT or please tell us all the trick for that one.

Good luck - do some checking but most of all don't burn, cut yourself or let the thing drop on you secure it properly that too is a lot to understand, default is "when in doubt - don't" always,

Hello,
These plates or flywheels can crack around the crank where it's bolted to
