can't change gears?

Hello, I have a chevy cavalier 2004 with an automatic transmission. I tried to leave to go to the store today and I couldn't shift gears. The shift stick just slides trough all the gears but doesn't actually shift. I have not had any jumps or hiccups from the transmission while driving this was just kind of a suprise. A friend told me it could be my shifter cable poped off or broke and there was a way I could check it and see before I took it in to have it looked at but I have bo clue where it is. If anyone could give me a general idea of where it is and what it might look like that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Look to the rite inside the hood it might be hard to see but down a little ways you'll see the top of the transmission and then you'll see where the cables hook too. Have someone move the shifter while you look real hard to see if the cables are moving. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!
