gear shift won't move into gear Sign In

2004 mazda RX8
74500 miles
1.3L rotary engine

Bought the car from a private dealer a month ago and everything has been fine until today, it took me a while to relearn manual transmission but after a week and a half I was smooth again.

However, today as I was heading home I found it increasingly difficult to throw my gear shift into any gear, especially first. I would have the clutch all the way in, but it wouldn't allow me to move into gear unless I pushed hard, it felt as if there was a physical barrier keeping it from moving into any gear.

I was on the freeway when this happened so I had to pull over and eventually forced the gear shift into first. I then got off and pulled into a residential area but cannot get the car into any gear to move it.

My thought is that it's the clutch disk failing in a way so that pushing the clutch in no longer allows the gears to be changed. However i have never owned a manual transmission before and am unfamiliar with some of the intricate parts.

I'll find a way to get it to a shop or my house later this afternoon, but would like some thoughts or advice prior to getting it there.

It sounds like you're losing the hydraulic clutch. It may have a leak in either the clutch master or the slave cylinder. You can try adding some brake fluid to the clutch master but it probably has air in the system already.

Do as hammertime said first. Then if that don't help I would try bleeding it.
If bleeding it helps the problem then you know your problem is with the clutch hydraulic system and most likely not the clutch it's self.
If the air leak is bad enough you won't be able to even bleed it but, it sounds like the clutch is still working a little.

Bleeding is a waste of time. If the system has a leak, then it has to be repaired. You can't just bleed a leaking system.
