Help! i have a 2004 hyundai accent with a lot of miles on it. i've had absolutely no problems with the transmission at all until today. i was at a stop and when i pulled forward my car made a grinding noise and then would not shift out of first gear. it actually felt like it was barely even in gear. i tried putting it in park and then in drive again and it thunked when i put it in drive. i could get it to move, but barely. it also won't go into reverse. fluid levels are fine, going to try flushing the transmission. any other ideas? i really don't want to have to spend a ton of money to diagnose something that i probably won't end up fixing anyway because the car has so many miles on it that it's not really worth it.

Hello,
Im gary, i have a trans shop in new york. It sounds to me like something inside this trans let go, the reason why i say that is beacuse it happened all of a sudden. Just to rule out a few things, does the car hold in park? Do you hear any high pitch wining noise when the car is running that changes with engine rpm? Do you have the same problem when the car is cold and hot?

I've never had the problem before so i don't know if it makes a difference if the car is cold or hot. it was pretty warmed up when it happened. it will hold in park, and there was a high pitched whining sound that wasn't too loud, but got louder as rpms increased.

Hello,
What im thinking is something came apart and is clogging your filter. Not sure if your still driving the car but as a test what you can do is, when this problem happens(should be when the car warms up)and it has trouble moving, shut the car off for 5 to 7 minutes, start it back up again and see how it moves. Changing the filter will by you a day or so before clogging again. What i would like you to do is drive the car when its cold around the block and let me know how it works. Gary

i drove it about five blocks today and there was no change. i had to get it from the place where i left it to a place where i can work on it and it was the same. wouldn't switch out of first gear at all. i could only go about 15 mph. it doesn't seem to be making a difference if it's hot or cold. it starts just fine and seems to run fine, just won't switch out of first.

Is there a check engine light on? Have you had the car scanned for codes? Gary

the check engine light was on and i had it scanned. it was a small evap system leak from a faulty hose i knew about before. i was recently talking to someone who had a similar problem and she said it was a "clip" behind the steering column that let the car shift that had broken. does that sound like something i should check?

The clip your friend my be talking about probably holds the shift cable in place, if all of your detents are correct(p r n d) then i would say thats not your problem. Any change in the way it drives or still doesnt move that good. Gary
