post locked   neutral safety switch replacement

2002 chevy trailblazer ltz
bought an ac delco neutral safety switch there is no instructions in the box.
first I had purchased a aftermarket one and had trouble the connectors would not fit in the switch, both of them so I returned it and purchased the ac delco one. (no problem with the connectors going into the ac delco one.)
okay the aftermarket one had instructions so I made of copy them.
It said to put it in neutral to install.
Well I did it with the ac delco one and had no 1 2. (shifter would not go into 1 and 2.)
So I have it apart for the third time.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong.
Also it will not start.
I was also told to count the detents to make sure it's in neutral. I count 2 and figured it's in neutral.
So does it have to be in neutral or park to install?
yes the brackets on there to keep it in a neutral position I even taped it on because it kept falling off.

Hello,
When installing these switches, after you remove the 15mm nut and arm that the cable attaches to there is alaways a lip at the end of the shaft, so before you slide that switch off you have to file down the small lip. When you took the old switch off how easy did it slide off? and how easy did the new one slide on? If you dont remove the lip then the switch will be out of round and may not sit correctly. Did the old switch go into 1 and 2 before? Question, those connectors are not that easy to come out, they are kinda like glued in, i use a heat gun and they come out easy, how did you get the connectors out? Gary(i have a transmission shop in new york)

Question for you Gary on this type thing. Haven't had the joy on one of those but if one has already been replaced and NOT done properly then what extra troubles does it cause. This one seems to just fall out on OP - can't be right just by the thought of it,

Tom

The biggest problem is that lip that gets on there, without removing it the old switch gets pried off and the new gets forced on, this will put the switch out of round and as you move the shifter it will not read correctly and probably not start, also the switch may have to be adjusted once installed. It says in the 1st post that the shifter will not go into 1st or 2nd, not sure if that means the squares wont light up or if the shifter itself wont move.

okay the old switch I broke off the center when removing and I used sandpaper to smooth the shaft before installing the new one. The shifter itself will not move to 2 and 1. I also used a heat gun to remove the connectors then I laid out there and pick out all the glue. Yes the shifter did go into 2 and 1 before I installed the new one.

Ok, at this point i would disconnect the cable and see if the problem is in the trans or not, disconnect the cable, leave the arm on and see if the trans will move through all the gears.

took off and reinstalled the neutral safety switch took about 10 times to get it to just slide on with no force. Now have all shifts PRND321. But still no start. also I broke the shifter cable where it goes on the frame, before the boot. So I will try some epoxy, or maybe I will have to replace the whole cable.

Does it crank and not start or does nothing?

This is really a run away thread. It shouldn't have gotten this far because there is already a thread open on the same subject. I'm going to close this thread because there is no sense in leaving the other thread in limbo and then confusing others as to why you were replacing the NSS in the first place. Please, OP respond in your original thread.
