1999 Olds Achieva...will start in neutral and go into drive but not into park or any other gear

Are you saying that you can't move the shifter into park or reverse?

yes....cant move out of neutral but can shift back to drive only...console shift with thumb button release on drivers side of knob

works on the push spring in but doesnt feel as if has any other resistance

The shifter itself is probably broken inside. You will have to pull the shifter handle off to inspect.
