shifts so hard into first that it stalls car out? Sign In

hello, I have a 1991 Nissan maxima, automatic transmission, when it tries to shift into first gear it shifts so hard it stalls the car out. I can push the car and get it rolling and it will shift through the gears fine but if it comes to a stop it will not shift into first without shifting so hard it stalls the car. whats wrong? thank you in advance

Hello,
This trans is called RE4FO2A, the "E" in the type of trans this is means eletronic. You should have a top pan only no bottom pan. There are 2 possibilities for this problem. One, a part called a dropping resistor failed, thats on the outside of the trans, or your epc solenoid(eletronic pressure control) is no good which is internal to the trans. Usually the dropping resistor is located below the air cleaner, but im not 100% sure, alittle hard finding info. You can also ohm the epc solenoid from the outside connector. Gary

thanks Gary, I'll check those out as soon as I can, I'll try anything if it keeps me from having to replace the torque converter or transmission

Ok, let me know how you make out, i may be able to give you some wire colors to check. As i said info may be hard to get, but i have a trans shop in new york and have some sources that may be able to help with wire colors. Gary
