2002 Nissian Altima 2.4 engine 289000 miles What can I do? The service engine soon light came on about a week ago, I got into the car yesterday placed it into reverse, the car started to back up just when I felt a jerk/bump and the car stop, the transmission would not go accept any gear, but I could hear a winding sound when placing the car from gear to gear, I never had any transmissions problems or indication that the transmission was failing. I show no OBD codes/ what could this be?

If the service engine soon light came on, then there will be codes stored. You may have to use different equipment to access them though. Be sure to check the trans fluid level before doing anything. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I ,ve checked the transmission fluid, the levels were good, top of the dip stick. where do I go from here? Can a transmission fail with out warnings or could this be something electrical?

I don't understand, I thought the check engine light had to be on, then there would be codes. even with the service engine soon I should be getting codes. I have a Actron OBD ll Autoscanner CP9175, what other type of device would I need to get codes for service engine soon. and I checked the fluids like you stated.

You stated the Service engine soon light came on. It has a memory and will store codes if nobody has cleared them. You may need a professional scan tool to be able to read them. Those cheap DIY generic readers can be unreliable.
