transmission replace issue Sign In

1985 GMC S15, 4WD, 2.8L Jasper Engine 173.

I have a 4 speed borg warner T5? in this truck now and when I try to shift from 1st to second it won't go. The shifter lever moves back and forth like the tranny is pushing it away from 2nd gear. I can go 1st to 3rd, then 4th ok, and I can shift into 2nd and start the truck in it will cooperate and move in second, then third, etc.

It does not seem like the clutch is slipping and I don't hear gears grinding. I was told to add tranny fluid and if that didn't fix it the syncronizer was bad?? Did that, same problem.

Can I put a 5 speed S10 manual transmission in in place of the 4 speed w/o modifications (bolt pattern the same)?? Can I keep the same transfer case currently in there? ('83-'89 from the tranny interchange book).

Is there any other way to tell what is actually wrong without dropping the transmission or am I just SOL??

Last, could the clutch be the problem??? All have proper fluid levels.

Please answer all the questions as I am new at this. If Jerry Lewis had a Labor Day Telethon for Mechanical Dystrophy, I would be the Poster Child, lol.

Thanks much, Joe

Will it go into second if you double clutch?

Have never double clutched. How do you do that?

Google or Youtube it. A video would better describe it better than I could.
