I'm gearing up to rebuild my first transmission. I found a spectacular deal on a new mopar 1998 44re valve body brand new. I have a 42re. After researching the mopar parts manuals I find that all external parts are identical,solenoids,sensors, rooster comb, brackets,screws. I am aware that the pump opening may be of the large or small variety and the pressure sensor changed to a plastic version in early 98 on. The parts alone I could remove from the body are worth or more than the cost. But if possible, I would just use the entire body. They carry different part numbers,so I assume the difference is in the valving but not sure about that. Looking at sonnax and other sites does not give a conclusive answer,but it appears even that may be the same. Looking for someone who knows the differences.

Hello, Basically the 42,44RE valvebodies are the same except for the suction port for the pump, that was enlarged in 1995, to keep the pump noise down, if both valvebodies are the same year your good to go. In 2000, they changed the design of the transducer. Assembly tip, when your installing the inner lip seal on the direct drum, 2 may come in the overhaul kit, use the thicker one. Change the overdrive/direct snap ring, they love to break. If your going to pull apart the o/d section(which you would have to to change the snap ring) you will need a line-up tool, to line up the o/d planet. Any questions you have, let me know. Thanks for your response! I have all the miller tools for this transmission, good snap ring pliers. I have the mopar master kit, some CNC machined pistons from solid billet,most of the snap rings and spacers, and a few hard parts. I'll watch out for the seals. After some research, I found the body is for a 4 wheel. Since the tail housing is of a different design{shorter) will this lead to any complications with the park rod on the body end? Also, the neutral switch is in a different position on the 4 wheel I believe. That might mean the plastic insulator on the rooster comb might be different. Even so I could use the sonnax insulator to correct. Do you recommend doing any of the valve swap outs offered by sonnax? For example the one that allows the convertor to charge in park? Not trying to build a high perf trans, just beef a bit here and there. Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

As far as the park rod, ive always used the original one, very easy to change over(there are different park rods, you would have to match it up side by side), If the neutral switch is the same as original body it should be the same, I personally dont change any of the valves, but if they are drop in replacement, certainly cant hurt. One more assembly tip, If this valvebody has the boost tube on the side, it goes to a valve under a small plate held down with 3 bolts, this plate will have a small hole drilled in the center, make sure the hole is .069, they come through with a small hole and this can result in a torque converter code. When these units come through my shop, i drill the hole out to .069 Gary

Got another question. The 42re front clutch drum has two bushings. Mopar says they are non replaceable and the whole drum must be replaced, which is not available. They do however sell the bushings, lol. On a jeep forum that I am in constantly, a guy replaced the bushings but said that it involves a lathe since you have to cut the smaller width bushing down to be flush with the edge of the drum. I am aware you can buy rebuilt drums but he says they usually just replace one of the bushings on those. I have the 3887 miller tool set but since the fsm doesn't give a procedure I was wondering if you could enlighten me. Guess after I get them in I'll take it to the local shop and have it machined unless you say differently.

The bushings are available from a transmission part supplier like transtar, where are you located? the bushings are made by a company in the aftermarket. Tell me where your located and i can give you the name of a trans parts supplier, you can most likely order on line. Gary

Have no problem sourcing the bushings, was just asking what methods you use to replace them.

So do you use a small flatblade to loosen them by prying up or what size remover to get them out? Install using a driver? Is the machine shop trimming something you have had done in the past? If I'm not being specific enough let me know.

Pretty much use a chisel to get the bushing out being careful not to damage the surface where the bushing sits, i use a bushing driver to install the bushing.
