My 2003 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab 4x4 with 4L SOHC V6 and 5-speed auto tranny will only go into gear if the selector is in "2". It will not go into reverse or any gear other than 2nd when the vehicle is stopped. However, the vehicle will come up to road speed (above about 45 mph) in 2nd gear, and then if I shift into drive the tranny operates normally as long as speed is maintained. During this time the electric overdrive functions.
What is the probable cause? I have checked all fuses and they are OK.

? I suspect "operator error" here? Why are you selecting anything but "DRIVE" to go forward? It's a 4X4 for other reasons not just driving along so don't mess with "Automatics" shifting all over the place you are just confusing it.
If it doesn't behave then there's a problem or YOU selected the incorrect "drive" mode for the conditions you are driving under??
This truck should have a clear owner/operator's manual how to drive it being a 4X4 I suggest reading that to know what it should do when you selected which option and take it from there if there's a problem at all,

I selected 2nd out of desperation because it will not move in drive. I must take exception to the suggestion of "operator error" as I have owned and successfully operated this vehicle under all conditions for 17 years.

We have a transmission expert (gsferraro) that should be along shortly. He is the expert on this stuff.
My guess is that the system is going into a limp mode. It would be helpful if you had the system scanned with a professional scan tool, not just a generic code reader. Post any stored code numbers here.

ok, so you have the 5 speed 5R55E, did this happen suddenly? does the car move in manual low? No reverse correct? Any movement in the drive range with Overdrive turned off? You said it move in manual 2? Gary

Hi Gary,
The vehicle will not move in reverse or drive with overdrive on or off. It moves from a stop only in the 2 or 1 position. I can feel the transmission engage when I move the shifter from neutral to drive or reverse, however, the engine just revs with the vehicle going nowhere.

Hi Rick,
Sorry for late reply, my shop is so busy i'm going crazy.
Sounds like a sprag is no good, possible overdrive sprag race broke off of the overdrive planetary gear or maybe something in the back of the unit like the low sprag went bad. Has the pan been dropped?
