whining noise Sign In

I have a 2000 nissan maxima, air, automatic, v-6, 3000 twin cam valve. It has a whizing noise I thought at first was coming from around the front of the engine but I guess it is not, I have changed the power steering pump, water pump, main belt tensioner, and have taken off the main belt and ran it without the belt and the noise is still there so it cannot be the alternator or compressor. I thought maybe the starter was hanging-up and causing the noise but I took it out and it was fine. Does the torque converter when it is starting to go bad make a whizing type noise ?

The best advice I can give you is to get a mechanic's stethoscope. A long screwdriver can work well also. Carefully, listen at various points of the engine to try to narrow down the point of the noise. Please pay close attention to where the tool and your body parts are when doing this. It is very easy to lose focus and get hurt doing this.
