[HELP]98 Honda Accord LX Ignition Switch Removal, Bolts are broken Sign In

I'm trying to remove my ignition switch from my 98 Accord (finally went dead on me but the last owner got the recall) and the two bolts on top of the steering wheel column were broken clean off. I guess the guys at Honda wanted to make sure that the next time their faulty ignition switch went out the owner would have no choice but to bring it back in.

Anyways, how can I get them off? Should I try chiseling them off with a hammer and screwdriver or is there a way to disassemble it? I would rather do it myself than have to pay out the nose for labor.

They use security bolts that break off on installation. Do not chisel them off. They need to be threaded out or you will do a lot of damage. You may be able to cut a slot into the head with a cutoff wheel or use a small punch on the edge to turn them loose.

They come from the factory with tamer proof bolts, probably for the reason you mentioned.....

You can "walk" them out with a punch & hammer, going back & forth from side to side of the bolt head with the punch & hammer......Or drill a hole & use an ez out.......Left handed drill bits work good, those will back them out all on their own sometimes....

Thanks guys I got it off but now I have a new problem that I have a feeling is much worse.

After trying my new ignition switch for about an hour, and it failing (managed to get the dash lights working again, one small victory at a time) I remembered there were some papers in the box that O'Reilly's had the part in.

Upon reading them I came across the following:

ANTI THEFT NOTICE
THIS PRODUCT REQUIRES ANTI THEFT REPROGRAMMING EQUIPMENT FOR INSTALLATION
Please refer to a factory service manual for the procedures required to install and program this part. Failure to perform the required reprogramming may cause the vehicle not to start or function properly.
Frown

So is there anything I can do on my end? Do I have to take it back to O'Reilly and they can do it? Or must I take it to the dealership and pay with my arm and leg?

If you haven't guessed it I'm fairly novice at this stuff but I do highly appreciate any advice given.

My database is down so I can't check the cut off year but the newer ones do require reprogramming. I really didn't think a 98 did but if it won't start and your security light is flashing then it does....

Call the dealer to see what they charge to flash it and also call a few independent shops, some of them will have the same equipment to do it....

Just to add...if you can start the car with the old switch, put it back in with the new bolts, drive it to where ever you are going to have it flashed & then put the new switch back in in the parking lot, that way you'll save on a tow. unless you have free towing then just go ahead & have it towed...

Unfortunately no the old switch was completely dead. The dash lights wouldnt even come on.

They need the car too? I dont think Id have the money for a tow and whatever they'd charge.

Re: [HELP]98 Honda Accord LX Ignition Switch Removal, Bolts are broken Sign In

lol well I found a temp fix until i can afford to get it reprogrammed. I have some knowledge of the antitheft for keys work from working at Walmart.

I unhooked the the ring that the key fits through on my old ignition switch and unplugged it on my new on and plugged it into the ring of the old one.

I insert my old key through the ring and then crank the car with the new set. Works like a charm every time I crank it. It's not pretty but it will work until I can afford the reprogramming and I can drive the car up there to have it done saving me a tow.

Thanks for all your help guys, if I ever have another question I'll be back.

It's not the switch that get's programmed. It's the PCM/keys and they need to car to do that.
