My Honda has been through a lot in the 13 years I've owned her, together we've added 250000 miles to the original 75000 she came to me with, and in the past year I've replaced the valve cover gasket 4 times, the positive pressure valve once, and have been told my front seal will need to be replaced, and that the mechanic usually replaces the harmonic balancer whenever this seal is replaced. My question is whether the new balancer is required, and If my dad and I can do this ourselves. He worked in an auto shop when he was younger, and does some repairs on our vehicles. I'm skilled in flashlight holding, getting my smaller hands into places, and some other assisting jobs, including changing my own spark plugs and tires.

There are some special tools required to remove and install the balancer and the pulley bolt will require nearly 300 pounds of torque to remove it. This car has reached the end of it's usable life span. These oil leaks are going to continue and get worse. The repairs will not hold for long because of the wear in the engine allowing blowby past the rings that is creating pressure in the crankcase. It's not even worth replacing the motor with that many miles on the car. It's time to say goodby to this one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
