Hello all.
This is my first post and it's certainly not a catastrophic problem, but it's driving me crazy.

I drive an inherited 05 Buick LeSabre Custom, 3.8L SFI OHV V6, with 65,xxx miles on it. Mom had the brakes changed last year, just before she passed it on to me, and I've not had any problems till recently. Since coming back from a camping trip 2 weeks ago, the left front brakes SQUEAK when i make a right hand turn, or when the road is pitched to the left, and I have to hold pressure on the wheel to hold the car straight. If there's any pressure on the pedal, it goes away.

I put it up and took the wheels off and inspected both brake assemblies. I did every step of a brake change except put new pads on. The pads still have 90% of the friction material there. I knocked all loose debris off, cleaned the friction surfaces. I pulled the little clips that the pads actually ride on, cleaned them thoroughly, and greased them with brake lube. I cleaned the bolt/pin that mounts the calipers to the bracket. There was a little rust build up on the threaded bolt part of them, but the pins were clean. I knocked the rust off the threads with a brush, wiped the hole thing down, and re-greased the pin parts. Got that all done, put it all back together, and it still squeaks.

The only thing i can see that's causing it is that there's nothing to physically hold the brake pad to the caliper piston, which lets the pad lean onto the rotor. On my previous vehicles, there's always been something there, a clip or something, that connects the two parts to hold them together. This has nothing. It doesn't look like there's ever been anything. It has the type of caliper that has one single piston on the inside, which when pressed, forces the inner pad onto the rotor. The whole thing floats on the pins, which lets it center til it makes contact on the outside.

My question is this, what do i do? Is there supposed to be something holding the pad to the piston? A clip, or some high temp adhesive? Or is it the caliper hardware? I've reached the limit of my knowledge, and can't stand that noise.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Matt

Check your wheel bearings for play.
