2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Brake Question Sign In

2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 3.7L V6, 50K Miles

I am replacing the brake pads and putting new fluid in.

I took all the old brake fluid out of the reservoir before stating an put new fluid in.

First wheel went fine. I opened the brake bleeder before I pushed the caliper cylinder back so I would push the old fluid out. I then hooked up my hand pump brake bleeder on and pulled brake fluid until I got fresh fluid from the reservoir. No problems.

Second wheel. I went to loosen the brake bleeder and it was tight as heck. I was using 1/4 inch drive and the top of the break bleeder broke off leaving the threaded portion in the caliper. Good news is that the bleeder is closed so I can drive the car. The bad news is that I could not pull an fresh fluid through.

Question: should I replace the caliper? Not worry about it? I do not want to try and drill it out and use a bolt extractor because I would be concerned about getting metal shavings inside the caliper.

On wheel 3 & 4 the break bleeder were also very tight and I did not force them. Any trick or suggesting on how to get a break bleeder loose without breaking it off.

Thanks,
John52

That's something for you to decide. If you plan on keeping the car for an extended period, you should replace both calipers. You should be fine in the meantime provided you didn't get any air in the system.

Thanks for the response. It is my daughters car and I will replace the brake caliper.

Any suggestion on the other two wheels that have the tight brake bleeders on how to get them loose without breaking them??

Thanks,

John52: Sorry to butt in but there's no absolute way to save them intact on vehicle. PB penetrating oil but just down outlet hole and on threads - DON'T GET THAT ALL OVER RUBBER OR FRICTION PARTS!

Sometimes tapping down on them with a hammer will free them up but can still break no matter. Do use rubber caps on any of them and it should have come with them as they probably aren't too tight but corroded.

Expect and prepare for them to break and do replace calipers (doubt wheel cylinder for back) but either should go in pairs not just one as HT said,

You should never replace one caliper, especially in the front.

Guys,

Thanks for your help on this. It is my daughters car. Over Chrismas I will put on two new rear calipers. I am going to go by a local shop and see if they would try to get the right front bleeder loose for me.

I have never had trouble like this before. What a pain.

Thanks again and happy holidays!!!

If you have already broken off the bleeder, then it's futile to try anything now. It won't come out without heat and heat will destroy the seals. You never clearly stated whether the was front or rear but I assumed it was front. Just replace both front calipers now is the proper way to fix this.
