2015 Lincoln MKC Blower Motor Help Removing Retaining Screw Sign In

I am replacing the heater/AC blower motor-fan assembly in a 2015 Lincoln MKC. The blower is deep in the dash and there are quite a few steps for its removal and replacement. I'm following instructions in the Chiltons online manual.

Things were going just fine, but now all progress is stopped because I can't figure out how to remove a single 8mm X 1 inch hex head retaining screw. The screw secures a 3 X 6 x 2 inch folded sheet metal bracket to a 1 inch metal supporting tubing inside the upper center right dash. A picture of the bracket and screw looking at it from the direction of the firewall is attached.

The bracket has to be taken off so that the air inlet duct assembly can be removed, and after that the blower motor- fan removed and replaced.

The screw lies above the metal bracket with about 3 1/2 inches between its head and the firewall. Below the screw is the largest flat portion of the metal bracket. The screw is oriented with the head toward the firewall. I can touch it with my finger tips from several directions, but I can't get a socket and wrench on it good enough to remove it. I have tried many 1/4 and 3/8 drive sockets, extensions, universal joints, and a flexible drive. The flexible drive will connect to the screw head, but it can't supply enough torque to remove it.

Once the screw and bracket are off the job is almost done. Before I lose my cool and cut away the bracket to get to the screw (just kidding / maybe kidding) I am asking for any and all advice, tips, tricks, specialty tool recommendations, or any other suggestions anyone has on how I might remove the screw.

I am probably overlooking some obvious technique or tool. I haven't tried an air driven ratchet because of the limited area for a ratchet head.

Thanks to all.

Takes an insane amount of tools to get at and more important to PUT THOSE tough ones back!
You said it points towards firewall (stopper usually) from inside and under if not enough room for wrench small ratchet to put torque on it while whole car is still intact there should be another way to get at it.
BEFORE I DREAM UP TRICKS ARE YOU SURE THIS EVEN NEEDS A BLOWER MOTOR?
What is the problem that has you convinced?

This may help with the endless things, tools that get to those places. I can't post many but it give you the idea for obstruction tools, 1/4" drivers that bend.

One more is going back if this job is real and stopped that I do, do is put a strong magnet on the tool to hold the fastener or tape it and be able to tear off + retrieve socket of choice.
Also a bit hack but bench grind down a cheap socket for the one use made just as you see fit to do the trick. OMG I have lots of those now it's recalling where they are!

Not sure what instructions you are looking at but I don't see that in my instructions.

Blower Motor
Base Part Number: 19846
Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

Refer to: Accelerator Pedal (310-02 Acceleration Control, Removal and Installation) .
Refer to: Air Inlet Duct (412-00 Climate Control System - General Information, Removal and Installation) .

Release the retaining clip holding the blower motor while an assistant from the passenger side compartment reaches through the blower motor cage and turns the blower motor housing 45 degrees clockwise to release and remove the blower motor.

Installation

With the blower motor on the bench make a reference mark 180 degrees from the labelled TOP on the blower motor to aid in alignment during installation.

Thanks for the speedy response. Great question. There is a new roaring noise and vibration with the blower. It starts at half speed and gets really bad at full speed. With the glove compartment removed and the system set on recirculate I can see the fan spinning. Fan blades are clean and intact. The fan looks like it is set on the motor shaft and rotating ok. No debris visible. No obvious loose ducting or supports. I'll double check motor and fan once I get it out. The cabin air filter was never changed in 5 years. It looked pretty bad and really limited air flow. The climate control system is temperature regulated so if air flow was restricted maybe it forced the blower to run at high speed all the time.

Thanks for the speedy response and double checking the process. Much appreciated!

Air inlet duct 412-00 step 4 shows this particular screw and bracket removal.

As I am working in the area it looks like the bracket is in the way so unless it is removed I don't think I can get the air inlet duct out nor the blower motor. I definitely will give it a shot if I can't get the bracket off.

412-00 also said remove the whole BCM. That was a real adventure. While I am figuring out what to do next I put everything back. Fortunately the car still starts and runs. <smile>

Have to take the accelerator pedal off 310-02 to get to the release clip on the motor.

Right now I have the luxury of time to ask experienced folks for their advice. I am definitely not a pro. Really appreciate every suggestion everyone has.

Quote you just above post ">The cabin air filter was never changed in 5 years.<"
*********
That would be hard on the motor fighting to move air is a reason for it to burn out.

Hammer had a trick (if you call it that) undo so much and turn it.

Other is if filter allowed debris, somehow, maybe a rodent or unknown yet it's so out of balance that too it would fail early - THIS IS EARLY IMO for a blower motor.

If pics of assorted obstruction drivers showed that always helps it just how fast to acquire before you have this car disabled to use it?

>>> One more for now as it's been a while (don't curse me) but look up the part and see if cage (squirrel cage) comes with it assembled or sold separately? IDK for sure. The warning is metal, plastic or what is used things that turn like it frequently are reverse threaded held buy a nut of some sort. IDK - you'll see it sooner or later what is used.

Not sure so look hard at a new one it's too easy to just snap those off does wreck electrical motors of the sort I think it would be - not a new idea for mega decades.

You decide on the filter if easy and optional to do without it. Nice yet is a problem IMO also - YOUR situation and where car is used.

The deal with I'll call it "Dash Diving" like this is TRY hard not to bust stuff really takes time to find or fix physically broken, dinky stuff that's mandatory to get put all together like you were never there,

Re: 2015 Lincoln MKC Blower Motor Help Removing Retaining Screw Sign In

Tom and Hammer - Thanks for all the great suggestions and comments. Lots to take in.

I managed to get the screw off with an 8 mm ratcheting box end wrench. Used a little finger tip pressure to keep it on the screw head and moved it out a few clicks at a time.

Tom I'm crossing fingers on getting it back in when the time comes. Worst case I'll drill a new hole for a proper bolt from a spot more easily reached.

Best.

Re: 2015 Lincoln MKC Blower Motor Help Removing Retaining Screw Sign In

It wasn't well published some of this impossible stuff was to cut a hole thru firewall to save dismantling the whole car.

Just keep in mind when that silly screw comes out it also has to go back. That's the obstacle not getting it out.
Thanks for the kind words for Hammer and myself - can be at odds with approaches or ways but know just the two of us never mind others have close to 100 years experience fighting with the impossible, AND winning!
