99 GMC Sonoma 2.2L, 5spd, RWD - rear end lub.... Sign In

Rear end needs fluid.....again. I should not complain as it has been 3-4 years now. Looked at changing the seal but the 4 out of the 10 bolts are either STUCK or rounded off (just the 2 holding brake lines. Rest look fine as I am certain this has NEVER been opened. No other diff. issues. This could go into the nightmare category. I thought about using Lucas Leak Stop. Comments?

What seal is bad? If it's the pinion seal there would be no need to remove the back cover.

I have never seen these bolts get seized to the point of not coming out, mostly because these bolts are usually sealed air tight or surrounded by gear oil.

Not pinion. Just the back cover. it is a very slow leak, and the bottom of the cover grease is evident.

But the 2 bolts which hold on the brake cable holders are rounded off......brake work is obvious as the lines have been changed. And of course it is a 99. The other 2 just need PB Blaster overnight.

So what is your experience with Lucas Sealer?

Forget that. It can do nothing for a cover seal. The bolts HAVE to come out. This has to have been caused by someone just using the wrong or bad sockets. You may have to use some tricks but those bolts have to come out. I really doubt rust is the issue for the threads. They are just tight.

Hi Lou! Dang rust is a pest of all pest if you want over 10 years for much of anything you use have to grease everything or get unrecognizable bolts in this case.
What to do? There are tools for that to a point up to cut off a hard cover like that just see if that can work? Yes - bolts hold brake lines rot out right inside the holders too if used here (MA) already went before or were greased routinely.
If bad enough and now leaking it will be over inside next. Used whole units closer to you than to me now from another area if the rest of the truck is worth the effort. IDK how much anymore the closer places are gone get stuff from out of state/area.


If you have to go that far just know the exact one and ratio of it. Problem for all I acquired was no real guarantee they are good simply you really don't know until it's installed said we assure it will turn by hand on the ground and some deal if a total failure for the next one.
Try hard to get the things out you can get another cover and a gasket it wasn't made with one in most when new rather a smear of sealer - many assorted brands of the things.
IDK, the # reason was they were bent backing into something way too hard ends that one.
Other: get help with a place that will just get the dang bolts out if only studs left only if the rest of it isn't wild nasty rusted showing off chunks of rust it's not strong enough anymore.
It's odd rest of some vehicles are OK and that takes the hit IDK just why - stuff happens. Good luck and do up brakes if another one lines and all. If you do it watch out for the struts with barbed bushings (the inside where bolt goes thru metal ends) must be in position as when tightened they are locked at mid travel not an extreme end or will fail!
