How hard to drop transmission?

Greetings all. I came across a cheap project truck with a bad transmission. It's a 1990 Chevy Cheyenne 4WD. I have time, tools but no experience. I've done minor work on some cars and replaced one headgasket. How hard is it to swap out the transmission in this car? Can I drop it out the bottom? Or do I have to yank the engine and transmission together? Is it as simple as sliding out the driveshaft, pulling out the axles, unbolting the bellhousing, and disconnecting the tranny from the frame? Or is it something even a semi advanced DIYer could'nt pull off? An tips or advice on this subject would be great, thanks.

If this were a 2WD, I would say go for it but 4WD is a whole different story. It has a large transfer case attached to it and the combination probably weighs over 700 pounds and most of the weight is to the side so even if you had a transmission jack, it won't balance on the jack and you could get seriously hurt on top of it being a pretty complicated job. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I find dropping trannies fairly easy . I've dropped several , takes about a month for the swelling in my feet to go down. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

Really it depends on how far you pick it up before you drop it. ;) Remember, a repair shop is going have to charge you twice as much for labor if you mess it up and THEN bring it to them. .:*:. Service Girl .:*:.
