Looking for a trick to make my car sound awful (and broken)

Hello there. My wife and I are supposed to go to my in-laws on Christmas eve and I am absolutely against it because, to make a long story short, they treat my wife like dirt and she just takes it and asks for more. What does this have to do with my car? I want to make it appear as if 'it wasn't meant to be that we go'. In other words, I need a trick. Some part that I can loosen, remove, or maybe just alter in some way that will make my car sound as if it has a VERY LOUD problem. Maybe like a terrible squeaking noise or thumping or even something that will cause it to keep stalling before we pull out. The trick should, obviously, not be something that can cause permanent damage. That would be biting off my nose to spite my face. Please don't anyone tell me to "grow up" or "be honest" or "this is a bad idea" - trust me, I've tried all those things for 2+ decades to no avail. I'm an otherwise honest and responsible adult but this is one part of my life that I have to pull something like this. Thank you for any suggestions! Happy holidays (a little early!) lol. 2003 Pontiac Vibe 4cyl AWD 115K miles

No problem. You're welcome here. We have to watch what advice we give. This is a public forum and all questions are archived for future search. We donate our time to try to help people but tricking your inlaws doesn't fall into that category. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Pretty new to this forum......poking around and checking things out........found this thread and HAD to commment, even though it is a few months old now and has evolved into something completely unrelated to automotives. One more post can't hurt, can it? I guess I'll know if the thread gets deleted......... Mechanics are in the business of practicing medicine on vehicles, performing surgery when required and not helping their patients to feign injuries! har-har If I may offer a piece of advice for the original poster-guy.............one thing I have learned over the years is that people are just people. There ain't a human being on earth (minus the obvious low-lives and criminally minded etc) who is any better than you or worth the effort it takes you to fret over offending them or damaging their feelings and relationships over, when it comes to that type of scenario (as you've described above). You needn't feel intimidated or threatened by your wife's folks, your own folks or any folks for that matter. If they melt into a steamy pile of goo when you stand up and tell them to get the heck off her back and get a grip, well, you will be ahead of the game.....they wont be around any longer HAHA. Do what I did years ago to my wife's folks, as well as my own folks on a different set of issues, and tell them how it's gonna be. Lay it on the line, man! You're in control. You married your wife, not her parents, so don't be affraid to put them in their place when the times are right. You'll feel better, and she will probably be thankful for it. Trust me. Peace brother :) Alby

My family used to say quite a few things about my ex-wife. She always asked me to stand up for her and was mad when I didn't. The reason I didn't stand up for her: they were right.

Enough wrong with the world - peace all! Not an excuse but know that THE most important person in my world died in my arms - nothing will take that away! Has a way of putting things in perspective! Tom
