OK to use for brake caliper lube? Sign In

I need to clean & lube my front brake calipers. I know you're supposed to use a silicone based lubricant. My buddy dug out a tube of stuff & said it'd be OK to use. I'm skeptical It's RadioShack Multi-Purpose Lube Gel. It's described as a non-corrosive & non-toxic adhesive lubricant. can anyone advise?

Forget Radio Shack for automotive brake lube as I bet it couldn't state the tolerances of the product.

You should just buy the right stuff. Brake lube needs a few characteristics not found in all lube products. Must tolerate heat, be 'rubber' friendly, impervious to washing out from water as much as possible.

Silicone greases are usually in that category but will vary in properties. Buy the right stuff - too important with brakes to fool around,

It says it's non-corrosive & won't break down or decompose. Also it does not attract dust, is impervious to salt & fresh water & works in -45 to +450F.

Does it say that it is designed to be used on brake systems?

as stated --use the lube thats rated for a particular application . chemist are paid big bucks to create lubes for different applications. you would not use axle grease for your hair or vicks for sex lube . OR WOULD YOU....Tongue
