Hey folks. I'm not a mechanic, but I learned something today about inflating car/truck tires that I thought might be useful to some of you.

The front right tire on my truck is leaking from the valve stem. I have the parts to fix it, but of course, I keep putting it off. Yesterday my air compressor quit working, but at the time, I didn't think of the tire.

This morning I found myself with a flat tire and no easy way to air it up. With no options, I decided to try something I once read in a novel about, of all things, zombies.

I got my floor jack, lifted the weight off the tire, and proceeded to attach my decrepit old bike pump. I was completely amazed when it actually worked. It took me maybe 30-40 pumps to get the tire fully aired up.

Maybe I'm just incredibly uninformed, but I looked around the net, and didn't find this information anywhere. Perhaps it's just common knowledge, and I'm rediscovering the wheel here, but it's good to know regardless.

Hopefully some of you will find this information as useful as I did. Have a great day!

Congratulations on your discovery . As the years go by you will discover many more things , some good , some bad.. At one time cars had a hand pump as part of it's repair kit.

You mean one like this?.............

Those worked, just slow. If I recall you needed to oil the sleave inside or they wouldn't work and have a good leak free clip to valve stem or someone hold that tight while another pumped away. Watch out for that valve stem as I bet it's ready to shear right off or hopelessly leak. Need a bead breaker most wouldn't have to do one, then perhaps faster air to get bead on rim again,

you can use a bumper jack to break down a bead . to reset the tire , lube the beads with dish soap . push down the tire as tight on the rim as possible then slowly lift tire till bead touches rim while helper pumps like mad. There is a redneck way to POP the beads back on , but it involves an explosion so we wont go there.Shocked

I tried a while back to inflate the flat on my old Mustang in the garage with a foot pump that was made in China. The hose got so hot it popped off the end of the coupler. That was many many strokes and the tire if lucky had 5 psi in it. I must of looked like one of the Walt Disney's Country Bear Jamboree bears playing the wash tub drum.

That must have been made for inflating pool toys and suck. Bicycle pumps routinely pump to 50 or 60 PSI.

You know you are probably right there HT. I do remember it having a sticker on the side that said "Inflate-A-Doll"

Yeah, you'd be popping your doll with a bicycle pump.

DS, you stole my pump. Now my girlfriend is deflated and I'm lonely. Thanks for nothing.
